German death in Italy 1945
« on: Thursday 18 August 22 14:07 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Just found a death registration in 1950, for one of my family, Stabsgefreite Kurt Viktor Sonntag in the Germans died abroad registrations. Died 17 April 1945 at Via Piomuzzo according to the paperwork. Would this have been Piumuzzo? Which battle would this have been?
If you have a subscription here it is

If anyone is researching this Sonntag family, Kurt was the son of Viktor Sonntag and Anna Maria Fritsch, who before WW2 had a paper dealing business in Tetschen-Bodenbach, now known as Podmokly, Czechia. Viktor also produced postcards. His family originated in Šanov, Moravia.

Thanks for any additional information.

It is most likely that he died at the Battle of Montese between the fairly inexperienced Brazilian Expeditionary Force and the remnants of the German 4th Army. Casualties were high on both sides. As far as I can see there is no Via Piomuzzo in Montese, but there is a Via Piumazzo in the commune of Piumazzo about 35 km to North East of Montese near Bologna,, so perhaps there was a German field hospital there. That was in the direction in which the Germans retreated after their defeat at Montese.

I had another go at the German war grave site. I think I found nothing because I searched in the German page, but then it asked for my address which is obviously in the UK. When I tried again with the site set to English it gave me the following

Kurt Sonntag is buried in the military cemetery in Futa-Pass .

Endgrablage: Block 50 Grab 554

It gives death place as HVPl. Via Piumazzo .

What is HVPL?
