Walworth Wesleyan Chapel - Baptisms
« on: Monday 22 August 22 22:01 BST (UK) »
I found the baptism of an ancestor Emily Elizabeth Allen at Walworth Wesleyan Chapel in 1837 (RG4/4328).
I suspect that her siblings Charles, Isabella and Frances may also have been baptised there subsequently.
Would anyone happen to know where I might find the relevant baptism register for the same chapel / circuit (neither Lambeth Archives nor the LMA seem to have anything)?

Thanks,

richard

The images are on Ancestry.

Emily Elizabeth ALLEN born 14 Jan, bap 9 April 1837. Parents William (gentleman's servant) and Mary of Champion Lodge, Denmark Hill.

Will look to see if there's any subsequent baptisms.

Modified to add:
Unfortunately, the set only goes up to July 1837.

For interest, there is this item mentioning Champion Lodge on Friday,  Oct. 26, 1838 in "The Standard".

Also:
"2nd inst. at Chigwell, in this county, by the Rev Edward Phillips, Charles, eldest son of Silvanus Phillips, Esq. of Champion Lodge, Camberwell, to Elizabeth Ann, second daughter of John Ambler Meaburn, Esq. of West Hatch, Chigwell.
Friday,  Aug. 10, 1832

Hi Carole and Maddy,

Thanks for picking this up. Yes this is the correct family and the correct birth/baptism for Emily.

Mary is occasionally given as Barnes but is more often named as Baron(s). She was originally from Sidmouth.

RG4/4328 ends in 1837 and so what I'm really hoping is that I can find their baptisms (still in Walworth Wesleyan Chapel?) of the other children somewhere. But then I'm not sure if the registers survived where they might be found. If that makes sense.

In 1851, the family is at 4, St James Place, Saint Mary Newington, Lambeth (HO107/1567/360 - p29)

Thanks again

This chapel is the one in Locksfields, which is Southwark, not Lambeth.

Southwark Local History Library have some baptism registers and trustees’ minutes for this chapel, c.1850-1955. A bit too late for you, but you could try asking them for advice.

Unfortunately, the set only goes up to July 1837.
In general, nonconformist registers were called in by the Registrar General in 1837 and again in 1858. They were not all sent in. Those that were have been transferred to TNA (series RG4 and RG8 respectively). This is why you will find many of the nonconformist registers at TNA end in 1837. Many other nonconformist registers were retained by the chapel, or by a successor chapel that may still exist. Some of these registers may not have survived; others have been deposited locally.

Thanks Bookbox for this, that's great. Was Locksfields then one and the same chapel as the Walworth Wesleyan or was it the successor? Do you happen to know of any reading more generally on the chapel that you can refer to me?

I'll definitely follow up with Southwark archives next ... and update with any news.

tks
