Hello, it has been a couple of years since this post but I am hoping to make contact regarding Rhoda, daughter of George Audley, who married John Marshall. I am seeking further information to expand my Marshall research and would love to know more about the contents of George Audley's will, of which I am unable to obtain a copy from the Hertfordshire Archives as I am overseas.

Hi Kells,
Happy to share what I have! Rhoda was my 9 x Great Grandmother (I think, I haven’t looked at it all for a while!)
Happy to share my copy of George’s will too. George is a bit of a mystery to me, if he is part of the family I think/hope he is then he has an exciting lineage!
Not sure if you can private message me here so we could swap details?

There were two Audeleys recorded in the lay subsidy rolls in Hechyn/Hitchin in 1545:
William Avdeley/Audeley 40 s
William Audeley 17 d

And in 1567 William Awdeley and William Coker were the plaintiffs against Richard Cowper for two messuages and a garden in Hitchyn. This was called Common Recovery, an elaborate legal fiction, but the result was that the two Williams "recovered" seisin or possession of the land.

There's a will of William Audeley, yeoman of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, 13 May 1547.
Daughters Joan, Agnes
Son William
Wife Alice
Executors son William Audeley and brother John Audeley

Oh that’s interesting - thank you!

I need to pick up my research really, I’m trying to trace George’s line back and it looks like he is linked to the Audley-Tuchet family but I haven’t found much around it!

Hello Cambridge,

I will try a private message to you.

I am related to Rhoda's husband John Marshall's brother Thomas Marshall of Michelham in Surrey, originally of Hitchin. There is a Marshall family crest that may be of interest to you, which can be found on the tomb of their elder brother Edward Marshall at Wimpole in Cambridgeshire.
