Looking for information on Regan’s
« on: Thursday 25 August 22 13:56 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I’m looking to trace some information on my Grandfathers family. I’ve only been able to trace back to my 2nd Great Grandfather and then there isn’t anymore info once hitting 1800’s.

My Grandfather was Maurice Regan born Ballylongford 28 March 1924, Father John Regan and Mother Johannah Enright.

I’m only the second generation to be born in Aust, my mum’s siblings were born in Halifax England as my nan was English and met Grandad during the War.

Hello,

You presumably have John Regan’s father, Michael and is that where you are stuck?

Here is The Regan/Enright marriage to give context.

Hi,

Thank you I already have a copy of the marriage certificate/register, wanting to go further back from Michael. I can’t find anything about his parents or grandparents etc.

Do you have an approximate year of birth for John?
May be worth noting:
The witness to the marriage was Jeremiah Long. 1911 shows 8 in censuses. This is one of them living in Tullahennel North, townland.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Lisselton/Tullahennel__North/274175/

The same townland shows Michael Regan and family but no John.
1911 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Lisselton/Tullahennel__North/274179/

1901 with John
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Lisselton/Tullahennel_North/1422450/

There is a brother, Maurice.

1920 death of Michael Regan -son,  Maurice is the informant
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1920/05120/4408751.pdf

I don’t know if it is your family. I thought it could well be and was pleased to see the informant on the death of Catherine Regan, Michael’s wife.

The informant is Hannie Meaney Regan, daughter in law - I thought at first, it would be Hannie  ::)

So, I have my doubts. However this is the process I would follow.

Following on from heywood's finds-

With father Michael maybe this is John Regan in 1911 census aged 15.
House 15 in Knockane (Listowel Rural, Kerry).
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Listowel_Rural/Knockane/274924/

Knockane townland which is north of Listowel, and further north on the coast is Ballylongford village (which was what both gave living in, on the 1915 marriage.) Click '-' several times to see the context between Listowel and Ballylongford.

A better view at OpenStreetMap.

I saw that one too KG. That is why I am hesitant about the findings.

John and father Michael are both described as labourers on the various records I have quoted.

The one in Knockane is a farmer. I know that people sometimes described themselves differently though.  :)

Hi All,

Thank you all so much for your help, it has helped me out so much and I've been able to add more information to my tree just by you linking me up I really do appreciate it.

I found the Dublin link as well; I knew we had one but couldn't seem to crack the egg, LOL. My grandparents didn't really talk about their lives in the UK and never mentioned why they left. I have to start saving my pennies so that I can get to Ireland and England and see where my grandparents grew up.

The search continues; I am now hoping to find living relatives over in Ireland and England and looking like some may have moved to the US.

The email for Ballylongford Catholic Church is here:
https://www.dioceseofkerry.ie/parish/ballylongford/

Perhaps you could email them and see if they could share the details they have of the marriage, sometimes parish records include a mothers name and an address of the parents for the parties marrying. :)
