James and Elizabeth Phipps, 1881, Hampstead
« on: Sunday 04 September 22 16:07 BST (UK) »
I found James Phipps on the 1881 census living in Hampstead, London, as an excavator, railway lab.  Several members of his family worked for the railway, and he had a brother living in Hampstead.  James was b. in Chelsea, 7 Oct 1844, and spent most of his adult life in the Navy, and I have found records about his time there, but no mention of a wife.
His wife is listed as Elizabeth, 35 years old, b. Halifax, Yorks.  Cannot find a marriage for them and no sign of her in the 1891.
James spent most of 1890 in and out of the workhouse in Hampstead due to illness.  There are references to some of his relatives, so know I have the right man.  I believe he died in Mar Q 1891 in Hampstead and am waiting for his death certificate.
Would like to locate the marriage, if there was on, and what happened to Elizabeth.  There is also the possibility of children, but no luck finding them without her maiden name.

Sorry for the typo. Meant to be he died in 1890.
Yes, the birthplaces for him and his siblings vary - think the family moved around that part of London a lot.
Yes, he was single in 1871.
My James is definitely the one in the Hampstead workhouse through 1889.  Would like to somehow prove he was the one listed with Elizabeth in 1881 in Hampstead.

Thank you for this, Neale1961!  This does match to my James, that is his mother.  Will have a look at my notes tomorrow but am pretty sure she gave a Canterbury Road address in the workhouse records in 1889 when James was admitted.

Yes, James' workhouse record also gives his mother as Mary Phipps of 153 Canterbury Rd.

I don't know what became of Elizabeth. I cannot find her in the 1891 census.

... spent most of his adult life in the Navy, and I have found records about his time there, but no mention of a wife.

Navy record can be downloaded free from the national Archive (after registering for free account)

There's a big gap between 1871 and 1878 - does it say gaol?
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

There is a file for him on Ancestry as a “military deserter” - needs Fold 3 access.
