George Barber marriage in 1852 in Brampton
« on: Sunday 04 September 22 21:45 BST (UK) »
Hi
If anyone has access to the marriage registers of Brampton, would they please do a quick look up for me in 1852?
I have a marriage that happened in March quarter of 1852 between George Barber and Hannah Hollingsworth in Blything district. As they were both born in Brampton, I am hoping that they married there too.
Many thanks
Helen

Hi
Can't spot their marriage on line
If it helps Hannah seems to be the daughter of Samuel and Anne bapt Brampton 1834
and George is the son of Harling and Elizabeth Barber bapt 12.11.1820 Shadingfield labourer.
(George's father  from his second marriage cert to Sarah Akers at Bromley st Leonard 31.10.1872.)

It looks like none of the Ancestry trees have ordered it either as none of them give a place or date.

Hi Ciderdrinker
Yes, that was as far as I had got, what concerned me was that George was somewhat older than Hannah when they got married in 1852, 32 and 18 by my calculations, which made me wonder if George had been married before. What I am trying to find out is whether George is a widower on the 1852 marriage and I was hoping that someone might have access to the actual marriage registers of Brampton and be able to help on this.
Thanks for trying anyway
Helen

Do you have him 1851 Census?
Is he unmarried?
If so it is a short window for him to be married/widowed and remarried again 1852.

Hi Trish
That is part of the problem, I haven't been able to find him as he isn't with his family in 1851.

He could have been at sea when the census was taken.
There are a couple of potential entries for him in Britain, Merchant Seamen, 1835-1857.
In BT 113
George Barber
Born Brampton, Suffolk, 4 Oct 1820
Register Ticket no. 30482
Capacity Seaman
First went to Sea as Boy in 1835
Height 5 feet 6 ins
Hair Dark Brown
Complexion fresh
Eyes Hazel
Marks None
Served in Royal Navy - No
Can Write - No
When unemployed, resides at Brampton
Age when Ticketed 24
Issued at London 11 July 1845

He is also in BT 116
George Barber
No. of Ticket 30482
Born at Suffolk
Age 33
Brief note of an inward voyage in 1854, Liverpool.
He is also in the index for these in BT 114.

Transcription errors make it harder to find him in the database.
For the BT 113 record, he appears as George Basler, born 1820, Brampton, Cumberland!

Swings and roundabouts, if this is your man then you may be unlucky with some of the census. But you get a description of him instead!

from his second marriage cert to Sarah Akers at Bromley st Leonard 31.10.1872

Hannah died in 1871?
Sep qtr 1871, Poplar, Hannah Barber, age 37.
She was buried at the City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery, 27 July 1871.
Abode Catherine Street Bromley
Age 37 yrs

Transcribed as Barker on ancestry. It does look like Barker on the image!
Much more like Barber in the Daybook of Burials (still transcribed Barker)

Hi Jon
I think it highly likely that the seaman entries are my man, which would explain why he left it later than usual to get married!
Also that is definitely the entry for his first wife's burial.
Many thanks, this just goes to show that another pair of eyes on the job can sort the problem!
