Not much help I'm afraid - Searching for a Henry LAWRENCE, music dealer doesn't bring up any hits in newspapers for me, however there is a John LAWRENCE of Lowhill, Liverpool, piano and music dealer mentioned a few times -
in 1886 having a piano stolen:    Tuesday,  Mar. 30, 1886, Publication: Liverpool Mercury
and bankrupt in 1888:    Friday,  Oct. 12, 1888, Publication: Liverpool Mercury

There is also a William LAWRENCE in the Lincoln Directory in 1872.

I've come across some census records and newspaper reports in the Durham/Northumberland area for people with the surname McLawrence, which has also been recorded as McLaren, McClarence etc.

It may lead nowhere, but perhaps worth extending your search to include Mc or Mac?
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Hi, maddys,
Thanks for looking.  I tried censuses for 'music and/or dealer' with few hits, forgot about newspapers, and could not decide what other terms he might use instead of music dealer.
Will see what I can do with a William in Lincoln and a John in Liverpool.

Hi, jomot,
Very interesting suggestion re McLawrence, will have a look.

1911 census they appear to be indexed as McLawrence.

They all have Mc in front of Lawrence

Hi, Eyesee,

You are absolutely right - in 1911 they have Mc in front of Lawrence - I had read that as a funny way of writing 'ditto', though there was no reason for a ditto.  I suppose, having seen the actual written marriage certificate where Max is completely separate from Lawrence and the father is just Lawrence I was just not seeing that.

Perhaps I should pay for the 1921 to see if the transcriber has made a similar (or different) error.

Thanks

Just back to Henry LAWRENCE, music dealer - I don't have a subscription to findmypast, however I see on the free search there are some articles that mention a Henry LAWRENCE "late of Rugby, in the county of Warwick, tailor, Draper, and Musical Instrument Dealer, deceased" in 1865 eg:
1 July 1865 - Rugby Advertiser

Although I guess this is him - buried Rugby St Andrew 13th June 1865 aged 53. in the 1861 census on Lawrence Sherrif St, Rugby with family but no son Henry/William/Max.
