Is it possible that the children were buried back in the places they originally came from? Their more distant family might not have been in a position to support them once they were orphaned, but they might have been willing to take them back for burial - alongside their parents, perhaps?

Yes I suppose thats possible. Although transportation of a body might have been beyond the financial means of some families. There must have been somewhere local for those who could not afford it.
