Albert Edward Wilkinson 1887 to 1973
« on: Tuesday 20 September 22 13:37 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information about my Step-Grandfather Albert Edward Wilkinson who was born in Ramsgate in 1887. Albert joined the Army in 1904 and was stationed in both Gibraltar and 5 years in South Africa before leaving the army in 1911 and becoming a Miner in Tamworth before rejoining the Army in 1915 before leaving again in 1919. In 1920 Albert left the UK to live in Johannesburg South Africa where in 1921 he married Anna Charlotte Johnson and on the marriage certificate he states that he is a widower. I have searched through marriages for Albert Edward Wilkinson on the GRO register where the partner has died before 1920 but have had no luck to date. I have dismissed the 2 marriages that should fit (Rose Sophia Stratton in London 1908 and a marriage to Mary AM Milstead in Faversham in October 1912) as to many details on both don't work I would really appreciate any help or information anyone could offer Thanks

You have a WW1 service record attached to your Ancestry family tree.  Do you think that it is the wrong record?

What is his status on the 1911 census if known?  I guess he could have married abroad and been widowed - do his service records have a marital status?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Lots of Albert Edward Wilkinson births.

What documentary evidence do you have that he was born in Ramsgate?

What document shows his fathers name & occupation?  The 1887 birth reg shows his mmn as Field

1879 marriage Thanet - William Robert Wilkinson & Sophia Field.  Sophia was b Perth Scotland

Apart from the 1881 census - William Robert does not appear in 1891/1901/1911  although Sophia is shown as married & there are children born between 1891 - 1901.  Sophia died 1913.

William Robert is shown as a bricklayers labourer on 1881 entry b Ramsgate 1857

In 1901 Albert was a greengrocers errand boy.  Not found in 1911

Albert's  service record states that he was given leave to remain in South Africa when he left the Army in 1911. He appears to have married there that same year :

I can see now that this man and his wife are not connected to your Albert.
