My Granddad's Brother George was in the Machine Gun Corps from 1917
After Training was in France till Spring 1918 then Home in 1919
Till October 1919 when the Machine Gun Corps were sent to India
It took 21 days to get there by Ship
Arriving in November 1919
Perhaps to releave Albert and his Btn and may have passed them on their way home
to be Demobbed December 1919
You may have been told 60% of Military Records were Destroyed in the Blitz
But that Storeroom held only Soldiers who were no longer active or were Dead up to February 1919
Albert's Military Record I suggest are still held now in Glasgow
You have his Birth Date 19 January 1895 and Serial numbers  18309 and 100806 to apply for it now.

ALAMO2008 - that *is* exactly what I was told, 4 million-odd records, in fact. Wow, you have really delved deeply into this; I will get onto that right away. That is an amazing document that you have posted. Thanks for the link and all the research. I've been reading the 15th Hussars history that I downloaded - it is not that interested in machine gunners (unsurprisingly, really) but it IS very interesting in its own right, and quite easy to read, given the amount of detail it covers. A horse person would get more out of it than me, though :-)

I don't think that's right. Per the MoD:

The Army Personnel Centre (APC) Historical Disclosures Section holds army service records for officers whose service ended after April 1922 and soldiers whose service ended after January 1921. APC also holds some records for the Foot Guards (not Scots Guards) back to 1750.

it's a puzzle. 'cos the Chapman record of service posted above (or below) definitely looks likes it a) ended in 1919 and b.) was in the Blitz :-)

It's worth following up, I think - doesn't cost too much to be wrong...

I'll re-post in a few month's time, if UK army bureaucracy is anything like the local one
