Request for parents of Ellen McCarthy (b. 1826 Cork, Ireland)

Hello all,

I would like to request information on the parents of Ellen McCarthy (born in 1826) who is my x3 great-grandmother. She married my x3 great grandfather, Michael Collins (born in 1821) who was from Dunmanway. I'm struggling to find information on her parents.

Michael Collins and Ellen McCarthy later moved to Bermondsey in London, and their son Cornelius (my x2 great grandfather) was born in the Maze Pond area.

I would greatly appreciate some help in finding Ellen McCarthy's parents names.

You've posted on a board for Census and Resource requests rather than the Cork board. The first conplete census in Ireland is 1901. Civil registration of births, deaths & Catholic marriages started in 1864 (non-Catholic marriages from 1845) so it's likely what you need to search for are church records. Some R.C. Irish registers online (free) but many will probably not go back far enough to find a marriage for Ellen McCarthy & Michael Collins.

There are also some Cork records on Ireland Genealogy site (also free). One possibility here but early marriages don't list names of parents-

If that is the marriage (and the surnames are very common in that area), the marriage usually would occur in the bride’s parish.

There is a baptism, 30th December 1838, James, with those parents. The townland is shown but I am not sure. It might be Bawnahow (there is North and South)

Bridget and Ellen’s baptisms took place in Dunmanway.

The witnesses to the marriage and the sponsors for baptism may help you to broaden the search for Ellen, as they might be siblings.

Having a look on a map, Bawnahow is less than half an hour away from Dunmanway so this looks to be likely. I will do some more digging.

Thank you, that would make sense as their first child Bridget was born in 1842.

As I wrote, their first child seems to be James who was born in Drimoleague. He is not with the family in Bradford so he may have died, remained in Ireland or be elsewhere. I can’t see him in Bradford though.

I can see the records first on another site and then look for them on Catholic NLI https://registers.nli.ie/
Sometimes, that site is difficult to negotiate as the records can be out of sync. I hope you get to the right ones from the links.
As noted earlier, the surnames are very common to that area as you can see from the records but there seems to be only one Michael C married to Ellen McC.

Lastly, you have Ellen born in 1826 which would make her marriage in 1837 questionable.

In 1851, Bermondsey, she is 29 yrs - born about 1822.
In 1861, Bermondsey, she is 38 yrs born abt 1823.

Where do you have her born 1826?
