I am looking for info on William Hodgson Barnes born around 1841 in Great Salkled. Some people have his middle name was Hodgeon but I suspect that was a typo along the way.
He married Mary Whalley on 21 Jan 1873 in Newcastle upon Tyne. They had 3 daughters and 2 sons
Edith was born around 1875 in Newcastle
Fanny Airley was born 5 May 1876 in Tranmere Cheshire
Henry Barnes born 1877 Tranmere Cheshire
Nora Barnes born  17 Aug 1879 in Belfast N Ireland
William Barnes born 1889  in Liverpool
Some Ancestry records have William H Barnes death as 1915.
He was an Engine Fitter.
Any information would be gratefully received.

It looks likely that William was the illegitimate son of Ann Barnes, Ann is on the 1841 census but not with the family in 1851.See marriage below.

Ooh, thank you very much for this information. There will be a number of people in Australia interested in it.
I have suspected for a few years that William H was my Gr Grandfather, birth father of my Paternal Grandmother who was born in Belfast in Feb 1880. She was the daughter of John Ramsey and Eliza McFall. The Ramseys were a very big family but I do not have any Ramsey DNA matches and neither does anyone in my family who has been tested, sisters, cousins etc.
But…we have a group of people who live in Victoria Australia and we all share a decent amount of DNA with them.  I eventually figured out that William H was the common ancestor of these people. I have been working with a trained genealogist recently and just this past weekend he confirmed the relationships between all of us…..so the strongest match is my half 2nd Cousin, we share the same Gr Grandfather.
He and I are very pleased to have this sorted, we all have skeletons, no judgement from me. The fellow in Australia just sent me a message today saying he has always wanted more info on William H. Thanks to you Colin, we now know a bit more.
I wonder about the Hodgson name? Perhaps that was the birth name of Rebecca Barnes, tge grandmother?

The name Hodgson does not appear on William's Birth, Marriage or Death Records and the middle letter H only appears on one census.

According to the 1851 census Williams grandfather Joseph was born about 1775 Bromfield, Cumberland

Rebecca was born about 1782 Great Salkeld, Cumberland, I cannot find a baptism or their marriage, however some of their children’s baptisms name her as Rebecca Idle. Williams mother below.
