WILLIAM JOHN DAVIES WW1 1919
« on: Thursday 29 September 22 16:29 BST (UK) »
WILLIAM  JOHN  DAVIES died on 13 Nov 1918 after war service with the Royal Garrison Artillery. Aged 24, he was the son of Rebecca Davies, Garw Villa, South Road , Porthcawl. Porthcawl Cemetery was not in existence at that time and he does not figure in the burial records for St John the Baptist Church, Newton.
Does anyone know where William John Davies is buried?  Any help would be much appreciated.

GRO Death Index Shows he died November 1919 not 1918
GRO ref = December Quarter 1919 Bridgend District Volume 11A page 926 Aged 24
What does his Death Certificate say cause of Death ?
If War Related after his Discharge he may now be due a Military Headstone Now under the CWGC new scheme and they would help find his current place of Burial.
His Death Certificate may show where also where he Died
His Parents may have placed Bridgend Newspaper details of his Death, Service and Burial November 1919

Gnr 76998 William John Davies born 1896
Enlisted Royal Garrison Artillery 27 April 1916 aged 20 Served Overseas
Discharged Aged 23 on 10 January 1919 under Para 392 xvi KLR ( Medically Unfit for Service)
Died 13 November 1919
Probate February 1920 left £404  to his Spinster Sister Sarah Mary who was 2 years younger
Pension Card/ Dependents Pension Card Index shows Award to his Widowed Mother Rebecca
But Index Card on Ancestry incorrectly states as 13 March 1919 should be 13 November 1919
Place of Death on Death Certificate if Hospital it could be attached Cemetery to it.
Being a Widow it is unlikely she could afford to purchase a Grave and Headstone
So it is likely he was buried in a Public Grave anywhere the Mother could get him buried in Porthcawl unless he was buried with his Father if he had a Grave Plot pre 1900

Haven't found a death notice yet but have come across this sad snippet

The Hand of Death.—Painfully sad were the circumstances attending the death of Mr. W. J. Davies of Garw Villa. Only a few. weeks ago came the news that his brother in far off Australia had died following injuries received by being thrown, or falling from a horse.

Porthcawl News 20 November 1919

WJ Davies, Gawr Villa
The funeral took place on Wednesday of Mr WJ Davies, son of Mrs Davies, Gawr Villa, South Road, the remains being conveyed by hearse to Glynogwr for internment.  The deceased gentleman had been ailing for some time, and had been abroad on active service. The Revs John Evans and EW Pearce conducted a short but impressive service at the house. The principle mourners were the mother and sisters. Amongst the general public present were Messrs W Jenkins, T James, J.P., Deacons of Bethel, where the deceased was a faithful member, Mr D Sibbering Jones etc. The coffin was of stained oak with brass fittings.  Wreaths were sent by mother and sisters, and Bethel Sunday School Scholars.

Added - a death notice in the Western Mail 19 November 1919 says William Thomas was the son of the late Thomas Davies of Brynwith Farm, Glynogwr, which probably explains him being taken there for burial.

According to this, he was thrown from a horse while serving:

Porthcawl News 30 October 1919
Porthcawlian killed in Australia
News has been received by Mrs Davies, Gawr Villa, South Road, that her son, Mr Morgan Davies, has been killed in Australia. He took part in active fighting during the late war, and after being demobilised emigrated to Australia, where he took up farming, and it was while driving sheep that he was thrown from his horse, and killed.  His step-brother is also lying ill at his mother's residence, as a result of being thrown off a horse while attached to the colours.

Hmmmm, one of the pension cards for William John Davies, No. 76998, Royal Garrison Artillery states the following:

Disabilities: Tuberculosis Lower Dorsal Region
Whether attributable to or aggravated by Service, or non-attributable: Due to

So it seems the newspaper got it wrong?  The card confirms his address and date of death, so there's no doubt its him.

Either way, it seems like he should be eligible for a military headstone.

ADDED: The Dependants Pension card for Rebecca gives William John's cause of death as Tubercular Spine, but wrongly gives the date of death as 13.3.19

Brilliant finds Jomot

It seems that his Two Medals were returned for Correction and Returned 7 July 1923
He was under John William Davies 76998

Obviously Newspaper article relates to his Step Brother in Australia falling from horse.

1911 Census by Mother states she only had 3 Children of This Marriage
Susie
William John
Sarah Mary
