McGimpsey's Loughriescouse, Newtownards 1700s-1800s
« on: Thursday 29 September 22 17:00 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a bit of help regarding my McGimpsey ancestors. My 4th Great-Grandparents were Hugh Wallace a farmer of Whitespots, Newtowards and Margaret McGimpsey.  Hugh Wallace was born 1793 and died  2 April 1880. No info on where he was born or his parents or siblings yet. Margaret McGimpsey was born 1793 died 24 Jan 1863.

When Hugh Wallace died in 1880 he mentioned, in his will he mentioned a Robert McGimpsey of Loughriescouse, farmer. I am assuming he was a close relative of Margaret's? Since Margaret may have been born 1793 if the age 70 her grave in Movilla Cemetery, Newtownards is correct and Hugh and Margaret would have been married pre 1818 since their son Robert was born c. 1818, I don't have marriage information to find out who their parents were.

Instead I wanted to find out who the Robert McGimpsey was that is mentioned in Hugh Wallace will and find out who is ancestors were and see if that could help get me one step closer to finding the direct connection to the McGimpseys.

I have attached the first part of Hugh Wallace's will that mentions Robert McGimpsey. The full can be found on PRONI Will Calendars by searching Hugh Wallace Whitespots: https://apps.proni.gov.uk/WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx

Their grave inscription from Movilla Cemetary:

"Erected by Hugh Wallace of Whitespots in memory of his wife Margaret Wallace alias McGIMPSEY who died the 24th January 1863 aged 70 years Also the above named Hugh Wallace who died the 2nd April 1880 aged 87 years Also his son Robert Wallace who died 16th July 1888 aged 70 years Also his daughter Jane Wallace who died 24th May 1891 aged 70 years."

I may have mentioned Wallaces before on her and Ards and North Down family group on Facebook as I was looking for info on my Brown ancestors and my 3rd great-grandparents were Hugh Brown from Drumawhey and Agnes Wallace, daughter of Hugh Wallace and Margaret McGimpsey.

Can anyone help?

have you looked to find the death Robert McGimpsey?  Find any of his children?
NB Robert McGimpsey is the executor of Hugh Wallace's will, along with a son Robert Wallace.  The names may indicate that perhaps Robert is a McGimpsey name?
Have you looked at Irish naming patterns for possible clues?
https://youririshheritage.com/lessons/irish-naming-patterns/

There is the death of a Robert McGimpsey in 1889 aged 80 so born c1809.

Death of Hugh Wallace

ETA:   I would look at all the records for McGimpsey on irishgenealogy and try to piece the relationships together that way.  For instance in 1849 a Jane McGimpsey marries an Andrew Cree. Her father is Samuel McGimpsey

Thanks.

I had assumed that maybe Robert Wallace was named after a Robert McGimpsey but wasn't sure. Since posting this, I found this which has been a bit helpful: http://geyer-genealogy.blogspot.com/search/label/McGimpsey It seems all McGimpseys may be related?

I thought I posed some of this but must have deleted some of it by accident before making my first post.

I have been looking into the McGimpseys a bit before I found out my 4th great-grandmothers maiden name was McGimpsey. I had forgotten to add that to my post. My granduncle Andrew Lowry Brown (Grandson of Hugh Brown and Agnes Wallace) wife was Mary Elizabeth McGimpsey from Drumawhey and her aunt or great aunt was Margaret McGimpsey was wife to my 2nd Cousin x4 removed, James Rankin of Crossnamuckley: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1881/11015/8027645.pdf

I have traced the Drumawhey McGimpseys a bit and found out who some of their family was but not yet to Loughriescouse. I also have a 1st Cousin x4 removed, James Shanks from Ballyfounder, Portaferry who's wife was Susanna McGimpsey from Drumhirk, Newtownards, father Thomas McGimpsey a blacksmith: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1880/11023/8030914.pdf

So far I have yet to find the direct connection to the McGimpseys from Margaret, but re looking at my 3rd great-grandparents marriage certificate, Hugh Brown and Agnes Wallace, it says Catherine McGimpsey was present at the marriage: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1855/09497/5441956.pdf

At Hugh Wallace and Margaret's daughter Sarah Wallace marriage to Patrick Adams, a Sarah Ann McGimpsey was present: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1871/11330/8158646.pdf but looking her up, the only Sarah Ann McGimpsey I could find was living in Drumawhey and had a brother Robert, mentioned here: http://www.newtownardshistory.co.uk/family-mc-gimpsey.htm

There is also Hugh Wallace and Margarets daughter, Margaret Wallace who married James McWhinney from Whitespots. Their daughter Margaret married a John McGimpsey a blacksmith who was living in Kirkdale, Liverpool at the time of marriage and his father was Robert McGimpsey, a blacksmith: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1894/10560/5847092.pdf I can find no other information after this about them so far.

I just had a look for Loughriescouse McGimpsey and while I am not sure if this is him, I found a Robert McGimpsey: http://www.newtownardshistory.co.uk/family-mc-gimpsey.htm

"McGimpsey, Robert - 15th. April 1900 aged 72 - {b.c1828} - Son of above John and husband to Eliza (1887)
13th. August 1900 - Probate of the Will of Robert M'Gimpsey late of Loughriescouse Newtownards Co.Down Farmer who died 15 April 1900 granted at Belfast to Samuel Bennett and John Garrett Farmers - Effects £394" His parents were John McGimpsey and Margaret ?
