It's possible that he married the previous year, at Bathampton, St Nicholas.
I say this because the bride's mother's family (Marsh) lived in Charles Street, Bath. According to the free index to the 1939 Register they were at number 2, which is the address for John on findagrave.

Henry John Marsh died in 1945.
Sarah Marsh, widow, of 2 Charles Street, Bath, died 25 March 1953.
Probate - one of the administrators was Nellie Winifred Daisy Plummer, wife of Stanley Leonard Plummer, who I think was her daughter.

The Bathampton marriage of the possible John Osborne was in March qtr 1953.
