St John the Baptist, New Windsor records
« on: Monday 26 September 22 23:39 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am also trying to seek information of a couple married at St John the Baptist, New Windsor. I hope you don't mind but thought I'd pop a message here:

James Painter married Elizabeth Ward 5th February 1762, the only note I have found is that the bond was paid by Elizabeth Ward, sen, New Windsor. I am trying to find where & when James Painter and Elizabeth Ward were born and the names of their parents. There are possible New Windsor death dates but I am only guessing - James Painter 1818 and Elizabeth Painter 1812.

I have noted all of their children and some of their descendants but struggling to find family information further back.

Just in case someone here can assist, I'd be most grateful.

Thank you, Kirst

Hi Kirst,

The licence doesn't reveal much more than you already know; the only additional info
that it contains is the Bondsman was;
"d/o of bondswoman - Elizabeth Ward sen, New Windsor dated 4-9-1762."[sic]

Either her father was deceased or that she was illegit.

Thank you Alan

Yes, I did see that too and wondered if her father was deceased. I hadn't actually thought about her being illegit as a possibility.

I found this record on Find My Past but couldn't see it on Ancestry.com which I was surprised about. I thought they have most records on there but I guess not.

I found too a death of James Painter in New Windsor in 1818 noting a Year of Birth as 1736 which could fit but the closest I found to this possible birth is 1737 in Wantage, son of Joseph & Martha although none of his children carry these names so hmmm not sure. I don't have paid access to FindMyPast so can't open the burial record to see if there's any further information so my digging continues.

Thanks for your input.

Hi Kirst,

The burial of James Painter in 1818 was in New Windsor - St.John the Baptist. He was aged 82 and abode being; George Street.

There are about  a dozen "Painter" burials in this church from 1774 to 1849, including  an Elisabeth Painter buried in 30-7-1812 no address or aged recorded.

Alan, thank you.

The detail of James 1818 death is most helpful.

Their children Thomas and Catherine passed young. And George in 1829.

Yes, I did see that Elisabeth, without the detail, and also a Mrs Painter burial in 1791, not christian name of the part that I can see. Their last child, Mary Anne Smith Painter, was born in 1791 and I wondered if maybe the Mrs Painter was Elizabeth Painter and maybe died with childbirth.

And then a Mrs Painter in 1826 and in 1840, probably not this one though.

There is also a 1797 Burial for a James Painter.

But again I can't see either of these on Ancestry.com.

Thank you again, really appreciated.
