Charles Sutcliffe marriage
« on: Saturday 01 October 22 09:53 BST (UK) »
Hi looking for a marriage between a Charles Samuel Sutcliffe b 1851/52 Leeds and Annie Maria Taylor b 1856 Wakefield. Parents are Charles and Isabella Sutcliffe.
On the 1861 census Charles is living in Wakefield with parents.
On the 1891 census Charles and Annie M are living in Hook Goole with their children, the oldest one being William b 1877 Wakefield. I've looked at the children's births and mother's name is Taylor but I cannot find any marriage between a Sutcliffe and Taylor. I wondered if she had been married previously but I am having no luck there.
Any info appreciated.

Apologies for this BUT where did you find the mother's maiden name of Taylor for William?

a) as far as I can see there is no William Sutcliffe born in the Wakefield RD in 1877, but there is one born in 1879.

b)  GRO appears to have no mother's maiden name of Taylor for any Sutcliffe birth registration in 1879 +/- 2 years.

c)  William Sutcliffe, born in 1879 and registered in Wakefield RD has mother's maiden name of Leyland.

But then I can't see a marriage between Sutcliffe and Leyland  :-\

That's quite a large gap - do you have Charles in 1871/1881?  Maybe he was previously married or still married to someone else  :-\

There is a Charles SUTCLIFFE (railway engine driver - the same in 1911) born c1852 Leeds in the 1871 at
Wakefield with a wife Isabella and children Charles, Clara, Eleanor and Fred, the latter 3 all born in Wakefield.  :-\

RG10/4625/26 pg45

Sorry, my maths is wrong, the father Charles is 42 in 1871 so born c1829. The son Charles is 19, so born c1852. Is the place of birth and occupation a coincidence, or are the ages all wrong?

I think you probably have the right family. Son Charles, born 1856, has the occupation of Wood Model Maker family. Living two doors away are Henry and Mary Tuke who run the Grove Inn. This is where Charles was boarding in 1881 and by this time he is a Railway Stoker. He is also unmarried.

No marriage found for Charles and Annie but the children from 1882 when daughter Annie was born all have mmn Taylor. I cannot find birth registrations or baptisms for the William and Edward who appear with the family in 1891.

Hi everyone, the line I'm following is from Joe Sutcliffe, not Joseph. He was born in Goole in 1884, he married Hannah Maria Brears in Goole in 1909. On the marriage certificate Joe's father is Charles Samuel Sutcliffe, engine driver. On Joe's baptism father is down as Charles Sam and mother Annie Maria. On his birth it said mother's name Taylor.

Annie Maria Taylor married William Peel Sep 1875 Wakefield 9c 18

They had two sons
William Peel Jun 1876 Wakefield 9c 18 mmn Taylor
Edward Peel Sep 1878 Wakefield 96 16 mmn Taylor.

William Peel died Sep 1879 Wakefield 9c 11 aged 27

Annie Maria with sons William and Edward are in the 1881 Census for Wakefield, living in South Street. Annie Maria is down as Hannah M and she is a widow.

That explains William and Edward but I still cannot find a marriage for Charles and Annie.
