Thomas RATCLIFFE, 1850-90
« on: Tuesday 04 October 22 17:25 BST (UK) »
In Q4 1856, Thomas RATCLIFFE m Emma ALCOCK in Cheadle, and the family appears in the '61, '71 and '81 censuses in Cheadle.

In Q4 1885, Thomas RATCLIFFE m Margaret HILL in Stoke, and this family is recorded in the '91 in Stoke.

I assume that Emma RATCLIFFE (nee ALCOCK) died between the '81 and late 1885, but I have been unable to find her death. Can anyone help, please?

Many thanks to you all - that's a lot of information!

I can only assume that Thomas returned to this country with some family members after Emma's death, which must have been expensive and somewhat unusual.

Apologies to you all for my rather terse reply on Tuesday. Since then, I've had a chance to try to digest all the work you've done - and I'm still trying! I'm truly grateful - you've been a massive help.

Thank you.

I noticed on the 1881 census, Thomas Ratcliffe was a farmer.  Some relations of mine emigrated to Canada.  They were offered a piece of land to farm.  I wonder if this was the case with Thomas?
