trying to find John Keenan's family
« on: Friday 07 October 22 15:57 BST (UK) »
According to the 1911 UK census he was born in  Bally Bay  "Mougghan" I have taken that to be Monaghan. Correct me if I'm wrong. He was born in 1856 or 7, and his father was James Keenan who died between 1878 and 1884.
Is it possible to find  a birth certificate for John or any information on James.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you

No birth certs in Ireland before 1864, so you will need a baptism.
Have you got his religion?
James' death may have registered but there could be quite a few in that period so how would you know which was his. Not registering a death wasn't unusual.

Reg districts

For Ballybay you need Castleblayney

If RC, parish registers

This should be the correct parish

thankyou.  But no luck. The available records don't seem to go far enough back.

There are only 2 deaths for a James Keenan in Castleblayney R.D. from 1878-1884. One is 17 years old and the other aged 72 (born c1809)-

Have you looked further into that death?

"his father was James Keenan who died between 1878 and 1884."

You have two years as reference points.

How is 1878 relevant?

How is 1884 relevant?

Marriages of John. Father "deceased" on 1884 marriage. Old thread about Keenan family.

Wish I'd remembered the old thread earlier, Maiden Stone  :-\

In view of the details posted on the earlier thread it seems as though James Keenan died at some point before 1884 not between 1878-1884 (which are the dates I used for searching).
IF James Keenan died in the Ballybay area between 1864-1884 the only death that fits is the one I posted earlier. IF before 1864 there will be no death registration.
It's also possible that James Keenan also moved to England and died there.

Thankyou for your efforts!  The two dates I posted are relevant as they appear on John's marriage certificates.  James is alive on Certificate  1 in 1878, but deceased on certificate   2 in1884.
I looked at the link posted and it does seem likely that he is the person I am looking for.
Which raises further questions!  He is listed as married, but no name for his wife.
Next question, is there anyway to find a family connection ?  I do not have any information beyond him being John.s father. John is my grandfather and lived for most of his life,  and died in England
I have a ?possible? sister for John called Mary Anne, who also lived in England. She too was born in 1856,7 or 8. Family folklore always suggested that John was a twin.
Again ,  Thank You.

Please re-read earlier topic- especially what I posted there in 2017-
Marriage certificates don't always list a deceased father as dead so it may be that all you can confirm is that James Keenan died before 1884.
