I would love to know what he said
« on: Saturday 08 October 22 13:04 BST (UK) »
I have just discovered that an ancestor of mine was declared insane after being accused of preaching heresy or "not according to the word of God".  He was up in front of the General Synod of the Church of Scotland.

In the Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae it just refers to the date he was declared insane.  I have found multiple newspaper articles but they all just name the charges and don't specify what he actually said.  Frustrating, I am so nosy.

His name was James Bain. He was born in Forres in 1831, the son Alexander and marjorie.  He got an MA from King's College, Aberdeen in 1853.  He was schoolmaster in Duffus before going to Glenlivit where the alleged offence took place.

If you can get hold of his Asylum records examples of what he declared might be given.

Was he sent to an asylum or just written off as insane?  Did an ecclesiastical body even have the power to send someone to an asylum against their will?

Written off as insane.  As far as I can see he lived with his brother until his death in 1897. I'm not sure they had the specific power to detain but I'd imagine they could apply a lot of pressure.

Actually scrub that I have found evidence he spent some time at the Asylum in Aberdeen. Although he spent most of his time living with family after the ruling

www.scottishindexes.com/mcsearch.aspx are expading always their record databes. They do have asylum records. A few mentions of a James Bain at Aberdeen Royal Asylum. You could make enquiries with them perhaps?
