Titshalls and Culhams of Alderton
« on: Saturday 08 October 22 19:04 BST (UK) »
This is a bit of a long shot, but does anyone know of a connection between William Titshall (miller at Alderton) and Jeremiah Culham (also a miller at Alderton).  The mill there passed from william to Jeremiah, and I wondering if there might be a family connection?

Hi Queenie,

Well, it seems that William Titshall aka Fitfhall was milling in 1801, and I have Jeremiah Culham there in 1806.  I have not really looked at the BMD records at Ipswich RO as the only start mentioning occupations after 1813, but the window is a tight-ish four years.

Added to that, there might have been more than one mill at Alderton in that time window.

Hi, William Titshall's brother Richard Titshall (born 1764) wed in 1785 to Sarah Fairweather and the 2 witnesses was William Titshall and Richard Cullum. I had never come across any reference to a Jeremiah Cullum before, or the mill changing hands from William to Jeremiah, so I shall have to do some sleuthing to see if there is a family connection.

Hi Coombs,

A Wm. Fitfhall (aka Titshall) was at Alderton in 1790 till 1801, Richard was at Hacheston mill at the same time.  Jeremiah Culham was then there in about 1806 as "miller" according to the Manorial records for Alderton Hall Manor (at the Ipswich Record Office; HB10/427/2(3)).

I did not have time to fully explore these documents before Covid, but my notes show that Culhama and Titshalls doth featured.

Culham - pages 72, 73, 77, 80
Titshall - pages 65, 66, 72, 73

All around 1801.

I suspect some familial link, but cannot find it to date.  I'll keep looking.

Hope you hind the above of interest,
