Portrait of an unknown Officer - Date?? Regiment ??
« on: Sunday 09 October 22 21:36 BST (UK) »
I would guess the portrait is mid 19th century but I'm unsure and I would be very interested if it would be possible to identity any details about him for example his regiment

Hi Shaun, this is a lovely chalk and charcoal portrait, I can't help with your query, but this will bring it back up the board for you. It doesn't look like it has a date or signature, have you had it out of its frame to see if there is anything on the back?

The portrait really puts me in mind of a young Prince Albert. Could it be one of his relatives maybe?

This chap in the Grenadier Guards looks like he is wearing a similar get up to the man in your lovely portrait.

Good evening,

He is wearing a frock coat for all officers, knee length in design. The patrol jacket was similar at the front but was only tunic length. You can still see officers in the first today, the second was abolished in 1902 although it has been seen since.

Added, sorry, my mistake. Prince Harry wore a frock coat to get married in. Remember, always check your facts before typing not after.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have since had the drawing out of the frame but there was nothing to find sadly.

Thanks all for the above that's a big help to add some colour to the gent in the drawing.

The website John915 mentions has a query page which you can also attach a picture to. Might be worth a try.
