Help
« on: Monday 10 October 22 17:20 BST (UK) »
I have searched for 14 months.  I have Nicholas Emmett b1607 Dean Prior married to Agnes Hoare 31 Mar 1643 St Sndrews Plymouth. Son Richard b 3 May1647 Harberton.
Problem I have Nicholas d 29 Jul 1653, baptism 20 April 1652 in St Dunstans Stepney Middlx.  I can't sort that out.
Secondly, I have another Nicholas b. 17 Dec 1571 Ugborough shown in Parish Register (microfilm) father William (Willi) Emmett d 1601 mother Isetae.
Is Nicholas b.1571 connected to Nicholas b. 1607.  I have made no further progress

I can't see that this is related to your Devon Emmetts at all.
This is the baptism, and then subsequent burial of a Nicholas Emmett, son of David Emmett and his wife Elenor.
The names don't tie in with anything I've see from looking at the Devon families.

Just to add that 14 months is not a long time to be trying to break down brick walls.
I have only just broken one of mine after 40 years of looking!
Many people will have similar stories where it has taken them many many years of digging to find their ancestry.
Don't give up  :)

Once you get to these dates in the 1600s, parish registers become patchy, and, as you have found out, usually only give a minimum of information. More often than not there are no wives names, no occupations for the grooms, no ages for burials etc.

The baptism of Richard in 1647  at Harberton just says father Nicholas.
Also at Harburton Anne 12 April 1646, and Nicholas 1 Feb 1644, also both just father Nicholas.
Then in Plymouth, Joane was baptised 19 Feb 1645, father Nicholas and mother Agnes.
Also at Plymouth Margarett 2 Aug 1650, again just father Nicholas.
There is also William 16 March 1646 at Plymouth, father Nicholas, mother Elizabeth.

How can you be sure Richard's parents were Nicholas and Agnes?
(Having said that, it's not beyond the realms of possibility the priest at Plymouth got the wrong mother's name for William, and she wasn't Elizabeth at all. It does happen)
I can't see any other baptisms to Nicholas and Elizabeth.

Normally the most useful route to try and sort out relationships is to find wills for the people you're interested in.
Unfortunately, most of the Devon wills were destroyed in the bombing of Exeter in WII.
I can't see any Emmet entries on the indexes on findmypast anyway, so it looks as if there were no wills for these people.

Hello Goldie 61
Your message about David and Elenor was very helpful. They have appeared to be relevant for some time but didn' fit and now you have accounted for them and Nicholas who died in Stepney.  Thank you.
I agree, finding useful records gets harder for seventeenth and sixteenth centuries.
The records you referred in the second part of your message to agree with my work so that's a good thing.
Now I have to connect Nicholas 1571 to Nicholas 1607 more certainly.
Tally ho and more fun because it is.

Sorry to confuse things more but there is another Marriage;

Nicholas EMMET to Agnes HOOPER 6 Oct 1745, St John the Baptist, Ipplepen, Devon

+ 2 bapts St Andrew, Plymouth
ELIZABETH Emmot 07 Oct 1630
TRISTRAM Emmett 29 Jul 1632
Both just have Father NICHOLAS

(FreeREG)

If your Nicholas was born 1607 then he was reasonably old when he married.
