FINDING KEZIA
« on: Friday 14 October 22 14:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Have returned to this search after several years, and still cannot find Kezia.

Born. 7.11.1805
Bpt 17.11.1805 Ashbourne as CASIAH SPENDLOVE illegitimate dau of Lucy Spendlove of Shottle

Bpt 30.6.1833 Turnditch  Mary Spendlove illegitimate dau of KEZIAH Spendlove

16.4.1833 KEZIA was subject to a removal from Idridgehay to Shottle.

1851 Census Bonsall Derbyshire
Kezia born 1804 is in the house of
George S. Ward 38 born Bonsall
Hannah             33     “. Shottle
With various children.

George Ward (widow) = Hannah Spendlove 8.8.1844 Bonsall, her Father shown as Job Spendlove. In
1841 Hannah is a servant in this household.

Can anyone please find me Keziah/Kezia/Casiah in the 1841 Census or Mary b.1833 her illegitimate child.

In 1851 there's a Mary Spendlove, aged 18 (born 1833) living in the household of a Thomas Smith, aged 62 and his wife Sarah in Belper - only about 4 miles away from Turnditch, as a servant. They were both born in Shottle.
Is this her?
I see there is another Mary born in 1833 to a William Spendlove, so this may be her.

Do you know if she was still alive in 1841?
There are a couple of deaths of Mary Spendlove in 1840 and 1841 in the Belper registration disctrict. Unfortunately, no age given on the indexes on findmypast.

Hi Goldie 61,

Thanks for looking at this.

I do not know if Mary b. 1833 survived, but have been unable to find a suitable burial.

The Mary Spendlove with Thomas Smith and his sister Sarah Kiddy in Idridgehay is the dau of William & Jane Spendlove, you mention, this Mary is still a servant in Cheshire 10 years later.

Because of the Month of birth June 1833, I have attempted to look for age on census born 1832.

I do know should not be that precise but over the years have become desperate to find.

Many thanks
Spendlove

Hi Mabel Bagshaw,

I have this burial 23.3.1834 at Duffield, but it just states Infant.

Can you give me connection to the record you have please,  because an age of 8 months would fit.

Thanks for looking

Mary SPENDLOVE death registration Belper Dec qtr 1840  (19/316) is aged 3.

Is the 1841 Mary this one - Mary SPENDLOW, Belper Jun qtr 1841 (19/313) aged 41.

Hi

The Mary Spendlove, Dec Q Belper 1840 age 3

Was buried in Wirksworth 25/10/1840 aged 3 and was of Ashleyhay.

Mary Spendlove June Q Belper 1841. Is the wife of Thomas Spendlove Of Laund Farm, Shottle
Buried 2.7.1841 Duffield aged 42.

As you can see there are numerous Spendloves,  plus Belper Registration District covers a huge area.

I was hoping that Keziah who is alive in 1851 could be found in the 1841 Census.  Possibly being transcribed incorrectly.

Any suggestions of what Keziah may have been entered as in 1841 census ?

Many thanks for searching.

My mistake - looks a bit like 8 mth but is actually Inft. Could still be her - the youngest age I can see in the register going a few pages either side is 1, so infant may have been used for any child before first birthday?

I had a quick run through all the Spendloves in Derbyshire in the 1841 Census, but didn't spot any name that might possibly have been a mistranscription of Kezia.
It is possible of course that for some reason she missed being on the Census. There must be many people who for one reason or another fall the though the net on any Census night.
She may have been moving around looking for work - you say she was removed from Idridgehay to Shottle in 1833, so it would seem she didn't have employment and couldn't support herself in Idridgehay at that time. Perhaps in 1841 she was still in a similar position.

Is she part of your actual ancestry, or just an off-shoot?
