1827 marriage in Aberdeen and the family
« on: Saturday 15 October 22 10:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,
my ggg grandfather, Gilbert Hay, married Helen Gordon in Aberdeen in 1827. I've got a St. Nicholas kirk session entry, June 28 1827, that says "Hay, Gilbert, Seaman in Footdee & Helen Gordon in Aberdeen, daughter of George , Blacksmith in Aberdeen...£..10.6". They had one son and Gilbert never showed up in any censuses, or anything else that I can be sure of, except that my father had that he came from Shetland (I don't have the evidence). The Bayanne.info site links Gilbert to one born 1/2/1795 in Scatness, Durossness, with a note saying "Indentured as an apprentice seaman for 3 years from 22nd March 1822." I've contacted the site administrator but he can't find who made the link, and neither can the Shetland FHS.

Does anyone have suggestions for places I could look for more info in the Aberdeen records on Gilbert who married Helen, please? And, also, how could I find out more about the indenture of the Shetland one mentioned above? Also, their son, George Gordon Hay b.1829 appears in the 1841 census as a pupil at Robert Gordon's Hospital (school), are there records that might give me more information about him? He went on to be a schoolteacher at Kingswell Schoolhouse, Newhills, Aberdeenshire.

Any pointers on any of these people would be appreciated, many thanks. I have George's descendants but not much for his childhood and his parents.

Many thanks.

I guess this might be Helen's baptism below however as you say no census for Helen or Gilbert. On SP Aberdeen Church Records cover the period 1820 – 1854 but no record for them there but maybe they moved?

Did the marriage record for their son note any additional information?

Thank you all, some useful leads in there. Good call on the marr. cert, Geo Gordon Hay m Ann Lawson 1861. Had to track it down through Ann Lawson, says "Gilbert Hay, seaman (deceased)" which helps narrow his death date down a bit more. From looking at this I realised that i had Geo's death from the newspapers and his gravestone, but not his death record. Found a death entry on scotlandspeople, says father was "Gilbert Hay, seaman (merchant service)(deceased)" so that makes the merchant service more definite. Now need to see if I can find how to look up merchant seaman records. Thanks everyone :-)

Hi
I'm not an expert on seaman's records either but here's some snippets to start you off

Gilbert Hay admittance to Dreadnought Hospital 1832 age 34  born Ayr sailing from Shields bronchitus
Burial at Shields ST Hilda 27 Feb 1833 age 34 of Academy st

Dec 1807 Royal Navy allotment of pay Gilbert Hay ordinary seaman to his mother 5d per day to be paid at Lerwick. This continued till 1810 when he seems to have taken a pension for life. The last payment I can find is Mar 1846, He's living in Northumberland.

Merchant seaman numbers-520317 Gilbert Hay born Delting Shetland. Last mention 1856 when sailing Harriet from Armagh to Waterford.
If that is him -baptism Delting Shetland  Feb 1798 s of Robert.

Gilbert Hay dec seaman register of pay .Died at Sea Grenville Ray . He was of Newcastle Master Atkinson. Died of Cholera at Quebec .Last pay 31.8.1854 paid at Fleetwood 2 11' 8 d

Hope that gives you a few clues
