Hi,
my ggg grandfather, Gilbert Hay, married Helen Gordon in Aberdeen in 1827. I've got a St. Nicholas kirk session entry, June 28 1827, that says "Hay, Gilbert, Seaman in Footdee & Helen Gordon in Aberdeen, daughter of George , Blacksmith in Aberdeen...£..10.6". They had one son and Gilbert never showed up in any censuses, or anything else that I can be sure of, except that my father had that he came from Shetland (I don't have the evidence). The Bayanne.info site links Gilbert to one born 1/2/1795 in Scatness, Durossness, with a note saying "Indentured as an apprentice seaman for 3 years from 22nd March 1822." I've contacted the site administrator but he can't find who made the link, and neither can the Shetland FHS.
Does anyone have suggestions for places I could look for more info in the Aberdeen records on Gilbert who married Helen, please? And, also, how could I find out more about the indenture of the Shetland one mentioned above? Also, their son, George Gordon Hay b.1829 appears in the 1841 census as a pupil at Robert Gordon's Hospital (school), are there records that might give me more information about him? He went on to be a schoolteacher at Kingswell Schoolhouse, Newhills, Aberdeenshire.
Any pointers on any of these people would be appreciated, many thanks. I have George's descendants but not much for his childhood and his parents.
Many thanks.
