NEIL, Levi (aka NEAL)

Hello,

Levi NEIL was born in Tinsley in 1st quarter of 1844, the son of Joseph Neil and wife Mary (nee Fowler).  He married Emily ADAMS on 11/02/1865 and they had two children, Emily and Levi.

The family lived in Sheffield according to the 1871 Census, but in the 1881 Census Levi NEIL is not registered and the 1891 Census records his wife as a Widow.

Can anyone please help in establishing what happened to Levi NEIL after 1871?
                  (NB:  His history to 1871 is fully documented)

In 1881 Emily age 14 is with her grandmother Ellen Adams 57.

However I'm a bit worried about this family?

1881 all born Sheffield.

I have today been through all the available Indexes again this morning and found nothing sadly.

Colin - not that it's really important, but have you found a birth registration for the Emma 'Neel' or variant, shown as aged 11 in 1881 please?

She is not on the 1871 census and the only birth I can see, with a mother's maiden name of Adams - is in Q/E Mar 1871 in Freebridge Lynn Reg Dist, for an Emma Charlotte. Seemimgly this is in Norfolk.

By 1891, the mother Emma (really Emily) - is shown as a Widow, living with a lodger -- no sign of Levi. Nor of a death for him in the previous 10 years.

Sadly I cannot find a death reg for Levi either. The 1881 census is also strange, clearly  Emily age 14 is with her grandmother. The only other birth that I can find is below.

Levi, the son may have died in Q/E Dec 1887 in Sheffield - aged 19 and shown as 'Niel'.

The father Levi seems to have disappeared.

Sorry I am unable to help BAC3. Maybe some Eagle Eye will find him.

Just looking again after nothing last night and have just come across this Levi Neil/Neal in the US

1900 Dutchess, New York

This is a Levi Neil from England born Apr 1840 and his occupation looks like cutter, with Marietta from Connecticut

but in 1910 Montgomery, New york

Levi Neal is a Fine Knife Cutler with Mary E. from Connecticut now married 10yrs
