Also interesting in 1894 that back in Bootle (Cumberland) Reg'n District a Marriage (not seen Certificate) that a Matthew Hodgson is transcribed as marrying Isabella Tyson.

Mark

Different Matthew. The Jericho Farm chap remains single. Matthew (b 1863) and Isabella can be found in Corney with children whose mmn is Tyson

If, as looks likely, the Thomas M. Skillicorn bc.1894, d.1968 Cockermouth is your man (wife Isabel died there too) it's a shame GRO's own death index not yet available for 1968 as we'd know what the 'M' stood for then.

1939, 33 Cranbourne Street, Workington
Possibly one to consider?

Thomas Skillicorn, born 7th July 1892, with:-
Isabel [otherwise] "o/w Isabella" ditto , born 21st September 1900.
Florence ditto , born 1923 later Burns.
Audrey ditto , born 1926 later Gainford.
George C. ditto born 1937.
 ...
Mark

Regarding Isabel, there is a Death indexed for Isabell Skillicorn dying 1976 registered in the Registration District of Cockermouth giving her date of Birth as 21 SE 1900, which matches exactly that given in the 1939 Register for Workington, Cumberland.

Today the death cert was delivered, it reads as follows
Thomas Mitchell Skillicorn, 20th December 1968 aged 74 years. A Gainford (Daughter) is listed as informant.
A Gainford should be Audrey Skillicorn (Thomas's daughter) who married Stanley Gainford in 1947.

I have had a look on GRO birth index and there is only 1 Thomas Mitchell Skillicorn born in 1894, Halifax, West Yorkshire. Mothers maiden name is listed as Hodgson

Any help finding his mother and father would be apprieciated

As already posted, on the face of it his parents would appear to be Joseph Skillicorn and Jane Elizabeth Hodgson who married Jun.qtr.1883 Whitehaven - older children being Albert John born 1883,  Florence Ann born 1885, James Kendal Jubilee born 1887 and William Hodgson 1889.

However, if Joseph was the J. Skillicorn who went to South Africa in 1890 he couldn't have been Thomas Mitchell Skillicorn's father - BUT there was also a J. Skillicorn 26 miner who went to South Africa on 30/6/1894.

There are no easy answers here and the documents you need are not available online so means you need further certificates, namely:

1. Birth certificate of Thomas Mitchell Skillicorn 1894 Halifax (to confirm names of parents, specifically father).
2. Marriage certificate of Joseph Skillicorn and Jane Elizabeth Hodgson 1883 Whitehaven (to discover his details, i.e. age (hopefully), occupation and name of father).

Details of court case refered to in Reply #1
Jane Skillicorn 32, charwoman, 26  May 1897 Whitehaven
Feloniously, wilfully and of her malice aforethought did kill and murder a certain male child at the Parish of St Bees, Cumberland on 17 May 1897.
Guilty of the act charged, but that she was insane at the time when she committed it, so as not to be responsible according to law.
To be detained in custody until Her Majesty’s pleasure be known.

Jane Skillicorn admitted to Broadmoor Asylum on 13th July 1897; discharged 25 July 1902.

This would explain why her children were living with different family members in 1901 census.
It does not explain why Thomas' birth was registered in Halifax, so birth record will hopefully answer some questions.

I wonder if this is the death of the male child that was killed?

It looks as if Jane Skillicorn (nee Hodgson) re-married in 1914 Whitehaven to Henry TYSON.

Her son James Kendall Skillicorn was killed in WW1. War graves commission records parents as Jane Elizabeth Tyson (formerly Skillicorn) of Guards Villa Cleator Moor, and the late Joseph Skillcorn.

From WW1 records for James Kendall Skillicorn killed in action France 1 Oct 1918
Father of soldier – dead
Mother of soldier – Jane Elizabeth Tyson, 54 , Guards Villa Cleator
Interestingly listed as full blood siblings of the soldier are
Albert John 36 yrs
William H 30 yrs
Florence A 34 yrs
NO mention at all of Thomas Mitchell

Jane Elizabeth TYSON died 28 Feb 1951 in Cleator. Probate to FLorence Ann SKILLICORN, spinster.
