In 1881 census Brighton, Sussex
Annie Sergeant 22, unemployed domestic servant is a visitor with Alice Shannon

Thank you so much! I hadn't started on this branch yet but hopefully  it may give some clues of what happened to Ann Murphy. I didn't consider that she may remarry but I will look into that further but then why would she send away her youngest child to live with an aunt and uncle.

The Census only shows who was there on the night it was taken.

She may have visiting and we cannot know how long she was with her Uncle/Auntie between 1861-1871 Census.

Thank you this is very interesting. I have come across another family with a Jeremiah Murphy in my research, I will have another look at those records. I guess Ann Mary could have easily changed her name to Mary Ann and dropped the Elizabeth. I will keep looking to see what comes up. Thanks again your help is much appreciated!

I am not convinced that the Murphy-Harris marriage is correct - possibly nothing to do with your family.
Ann signed her name when she married Serjeant, and Jeremiah's occupation doesn't fit with him being an ex-mariner and naval pensioner.

However looking into Jeremiah a bit further,  led me to finding his death....
Dreadnought Seamen’s Hospital admission
Jeremiah Murphy, age 86, born Cork
Sept 5th 1874 -  admitted Somerset
– John B Spurle; Address 4 Otago Terrace Cheltenham
Admitted with senility. Died 15 March 1876

Death Rego:
MURPHY, JEREMIAH       86

Thank you! Yes this makes sense as I found him in 1871 census with his daughter Elizabeth who married a John Spurle. Ann Mary Murphy remains a mystery!

Yes indeed, Ann is still a mystery. When you get her husband's death certificate it may give you information about whether he was a widower or still married.
