A Rootschat Bevil mystery
« on: Tuesday 18 October 22 17:06 BST (UK) »
The Bevil name has been a post of mine approx . 10 years ago and threw up many cans of worms as regards bigamy , alias names inc . Hughes and Melville , accountancy issues and other problems to find answers to .
Anyway this is the next one ..if anyone can help .

Some of this info . is on Familysearch and I give for reference with no certainty .

John Bevil married Ann Jessop which I believe is her second mrg . as she has a daughter ( Ann Jessop ) living with her on the 1841 census and she can be traced through the years . They are shown on the 1851 census in Clifton ( Bristol ) with the daughter now mrd . to George Williams .

John and Ann Bevil I believe from info . on F/S mrd . in Oxford ( I have no date ) but believe as their next to daughters are born 1826 ( Oxford - Eliza ) and 1828 ( Cheltenham - Jane where they are also shown in 1841 ) , that they moved there c . 1827 and married prior to 1826 ( the first shown birth ) .

Can anyone provide mrg . dates for both her mrgs , first husband name and date of death ( there is a pos . Sheard / Jessop mrg . in 1816  ? ) . Are there parish records available online I can search ?
I've looked through much of the Bevil info . on Rootschat today ( again ) and looked to document dates , names etc.. but what an issue this has become for those of us searching for Bevil info . on John ( as you might find if you trawled through it ) .

Appreciate any support..thankyou .

You state that there is a possible marriage in 1816,yet give no first names, nor a place.
Does the "daughter's" baptism provide a possible clue as to paternal lineage ( & therefore a marriage ) for Ann the mother?

George Williams married Ann Jessop on 20 January 1844 in Cheltenham. The father is listed as Walter Jessop, grocer. One of the witnesses is Eliza Bevill.

The will of Walter Jessop was proved in 1819 in Oxford. He left everything to his wife, Ann.

Queen of the West..thats a great piece of info . as you may see I've just posted what I've found this morning regarding Walter ..Eliza like I said was a known sister . Is that will available online ?
There is also from previous Rootschat discussions a possible ' pre nup ' agreement / contract between John Bevil and Ann Jessop at their mrg . From extensive reading today and trying to plan the information out , he seems to have been a bigamist and a little naughty with someone else's money before going to NZ or South Africa..TBH , what a minefield to fathom out..but hey ho .
Thankyou for this info . appreciate your time .

QueenoftheWest..sorry I was posting some similar info . found today on The Index of Oxford Diocese Mrg Bonds and Affadavits regarding Walter Jessop to a previous reply to my request ( PaulineJ ) and deleted my post... it seems .
Anyway..it says there was a mrg . between an Ann Sheard and Walter Jessop  05 Jan 1816 and I had put it on my research as a possible surname for Ann if Walter had died .
You have ' backed that up ' . All these dates are starting to fit in and answered one of PaulineJ response with the bp . name  not that I had a record of the bp ) . Walter and Ann married in St . Michaels , Oxford and the record as I said previously shows her surname of Sheard .

Is that will available online ?

Oxfordshire wills are available to view online at Findmypast.

Anyway..it says there was a mrg . between an Ann Sheard and Walter Jessop  05 Jan 1816 and I had put it on my research as a possible surname for Ann if Walter had died.

From Oxford University and City Herald, 13 January 1816:
Sunday last was married, at Bicester, in this county, Mr. Jessop, grocer and tea dealer, in the Corn-Market, to Miss Sheard, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Sheard, grocer, of this city.

From Oxford University and City Herald, 10 April 1819:
On Monday died, after a lingering illness, sincerely regretted, aged 26, Mr. Jessop, grocer, of the Corn market, in this city.

From Oxford University and City Herald, 23 November 1822:
On Monday last was married, at St. Michael's Church, in this city, Mr. J. W. Bevil, of Reading, to Mrs. Jessop, widow of the late Mr. Jessop, grocer, in the Corn Market.
