In 1871 Martin McHugh married Julia Mangan in Liverpool.   1881 shows him in Blackburn aged 54 & Julia aged 43 - both b Ireland

Which Martin is this supposed to be? The son was born in 1853 and it looks like the father died in 1860.

Apologies if I am getting confused!

Looks like Mary Ann was telling the truth about her father's occupation! If he returned from India in 1845 then it explains why he and Catherine were married in 1846.

Here's the corresponding death registration:

Hi Queenie
Re the 1871 marriage - it was strange to have a Martin McHugh marrying in Liverpool but then living in Blackburn given the 1861/71 census entries for the Martin McKew/McCue/McHugh family also living in Blackburn

Your Mangan find suggested a connection

I see  :)

Definitely possible. I missed one of their children: Patrick McHugh baptised in 1851 in Castlebar. They don't really seem to keep track of the ages of their children, that's for sure!

From Liverpool Daily Post 10 June 1867:

Martin McKew (13), shopboy, and Catherine McKew (44), hawker, were charged - the former with stealing, on the 24th April, 2lbs. of tea, the property of Thomas Lilwall; and the latter with having afterwards received the same, well knowing it to have been feloniously stolen. The lad was sentenced to 19 days' imprisonment, after which he will be sent to a reformatory for 5 years; the woman was committed to gaol for 15 months.

So sad.

Thank you Jomot for finding the military records, and to Queenie for posting Martin's death record and the newspaper article. Thank you also Carole for your help.

I think think we've identified the right family, it does seem to fit! Thank you all so much! :)
