Thank you so much Maddys52.

Yes, I was a member of Ancestry some years ago but unfortunately couldn't keep up with the membership.

I have all info regarding William Hugh Martin from 1900 onwards when he married Matilda Sophia Webb in England but cannot find a birth certificate for him. I purchased their certificate of marriage some time ago which states that his father is/was Arthur Martin - (horse dealer & deceased at the time of marriage).

I have other info of Arthur being with the Canadian Volunteer Militia throughout 1868 to 1880. In the 1868 document, it is handwritten and mentions the name John as his brother.

I have the name Mary Eade as the wife of Arthur, but no proof. Also, I believe that Mary may have remarried a Henry Astbury in 1911.

I also have a letter that 'somebody' typed up and was given to me by Elise Cousins, my auntie Elsie, (named after her mother, my Nana) years ago and I was too busy living life to ask any questions unfortunately. It says that William Hugh Martin was a French Canadian, a member of Roman Catholic family, 2 brothers and 1 sister. Also states that William's father, Arthur, was a horse & cattle dealer who was murdered on a train for his money, we think around 1880 just after. (I've tried to attach but the 'file is too large")

I've found a few relatives in England and one here in Australia and it's awesome to correspond with them but they're all getting older or passed, still wanting to find relatives from Canada.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and if you can help in anyway, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

It may be best to start a new thread about William Hugh MARTIN. I'll ask a moderator if it's possible to separate this thread into a new one. You'll hopefully get more people looking - especially others that are used to looking for Canadian records.

As a start - the Canadian censuses are free to view:
https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca

This looks like William MARTIN in 1881 - no father, though it looks to me to have "M" (rather than widowed) for Mary MARTIN:

In 1891, mother Mary does appear to have remarried to Henry ASTBURY:

The 1901 census appears to say William arrived 1876 in Canada. However this has him still with mother - Mary ASTBURY and single. However you say he married 1900 in England? Perhaps this is not "your" William MARTIN.  :-\

Please do ask, otherwise I'll start a new thread.

I've seen the 1881 Census with mother Mary, children William Hugh, Mary and Kate. Says they're born in England and Church of England, which contradicts the letter that says William was born in Montreal, Canada and the family were Roman Catholics. (1911 England Census shows William Hugh as being born in Montreal, Canada)

1891 Census with Henry Astbury, mother Mary, children William Hugh, Mary and Lottie - what happened to Kate? Again, says they're born in England.

1901 Census here we've got Thomas & George added to the mix & the country/place of birth for William T Martin is   M.S?   not England as is Marys' and also, I read that as William being an Adopted Son.
But.... THIS census aligns with the family letter that says William Hugh had 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Thanks for the links, I'll wait to hear about a new thread..
Cheers
