Place in Aberdeen the bride was from?
« on: Sunday 23 October 22 12:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,
not sure if this should be in the Handwriting section, but I'm hoping those of you familiar with Aberdeen will be able to help. I've got the kirk entry for the marriage of George Gordon and Mary Saddler in 1787. I can get most of it, but I'm struggling with the place the bride is from. I read it as:

July 8th George Gordon & Mary Saddler
Upon the Eighth Day of July one Thousand seven Hundred & Eightseven, By the Reverend Mr James Shirre?? one of the ministers of Aberdeen were lawfully married in the house of Dr James Beattie Professor of Phylosophy in Aberdeen, after due Proclamation of Banns, George Gordon Blacksmith in Aberdeen & Marry Saddler lawful Daughter of the Deceased Andrew Saddler late Farmer in the Parish of ?? [I read Fetterfoo but there's no such place], In presence of these witnesses William Smith Blacksmith in Aberdeen & Alexander Smith Merchant there.

Can anyone help with the placename, please? I'm assuming it's in/near Aberdeen, I know, but it seems like the logical place to start.

Many thanks

It would have been easier if you had posted a screenshot from the image of the baptism record, but it's probably Fetteresso in Kincardineshire. This is the parish in which Stonehaven in the best-known place.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
