Sarah Ann Haworth baptism 1842
« on: Thursday 27 October 22 07:48 BST (UK) »
More help needed with a transcript for a baptism in 1842, Edenfield. The parents are George & Alice (Pickup) Haworth from Leaches and the child is Sarah Ann Haworth. Again, on searching the GRO UK, I can't find the record of the birth - at least not with a mother's maiden name of Pickup. There is also no record on the Lancashire bmd.org site.

I have searched the GRO index from 1838 through to 1846 without success. The only birth registered in Bury was in 1843, but for a Sarah Haworth, mother's maiden Haworth in the J quarter. The only Sarah Ann I found in 1842 the mother's maiden name was Livesey and I did buy the record just to satisfy my curiosity.

Many thanks for any assistance.

The image of the 1842 baptism at Edenfield is available on Ancestry -

Sarah Anne - born 3 June 1842, baptised 29 June - daughter of George and Alice Haworth of Leeches.  George is a Farmer.

Birth registrations in England were not compulsory until 1875.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Entries on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk are also shown on the GRO index.  The difference with LancsBMD is it confirms the spouse name & gives the venue for the marriage.

If it’s not on the GRO index - it won’t be on LancsBMD.

LancsBMD does not record every GRO entry as it is complied by volunteers & is incomplete

As explained above - failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/75 so many births went unregistered prior to then

The whole point of the local BMD projects is to correct errors and omissions in the central GRO index!

Each quarter the "original local BMD indexes were re-transcribed and sent to the General Register Office (GRO) in London, where they were re-indexed into a national catalogue. The latter have been made available to the public as the GRO (General Register Office) indexes. However, the simple act of making this secondary GRO copy introduced many errors and omissions"

Are you sure Sarah's mother was Alice Pickip not Hoyle?
