Address in Barmouth
« on: Friday 28 October 22 17:55 BST (UK) »
2 Aelfron Terrace is the place I am looking for, built of stone in about 1870 / 80s.
It was advertised along with Glasfor  Terrace in 1883, Glasfor Terrace is still there so hoping that Aelfron is too.
A photo would be great.
Thanks

That's a tricky one. Finding house names or numbers on google streetview is hard enough without them being built up the side of a cliff.
Anyway Streetview reckons Glasfor Terrace is on King Edward Road, But has not heard of Aelfron Terrace. Would it be reasonable to assume they are near each other? There is a rather nicer terrace of four just across the road? I can't see names or numbers on those. I would hate to be the postman round there! Alternatively, and more in keeping with Glasfor, there is a terrace just down hill of Glasfor (there is a couple of buildings inbetween) which is clearly numbered 1-8. My instinct says Aelfron is probably that one, but I have no idea how you can tell if they don't use the name anymore. Write to the local council and see if they know?
IF I'm right, then no2 is the one with a white door with an oval window in it.  :-\

I see in 1901 Griffith EVANS is living at 2 Aelfron Terrace.
RG13/5254/99 pg 26

Just a bit prior to this on the enumerator's route is the Police Station which you can see on this 1900 map. Hanlith Terrace is a bit further along the route, so I would guess Aelfron Terrace is between the Police Station and Hendre Villas. There are 5 terraces in Glasfor Terrace on the census and 7 in Aelfron Terrace, with 2 houses between them, so Glasfor might be the ones closest to Hendre Villas?

Can I just confirm "Aelfron Terrace"?
Welsh newspapers has just 2 references to Aelfron Terrace - naming Griffith Evans as the occupier (17 Oct 1902) . However, checking out Griffith Evans on the 1901 Census returns the address "2 Aelfor Terrace".

Checking various census I cannot find an Aelfron Terrace in Barmouth/Abermaw - only Aelfor Terrace. Plenty of newspaper items for that address.

Walking King Edward Street, house names from the 1911 Census can still be seen eg - Rosehill, Riverslea and Ripon House. The 1911 Census (Enumerator's List) reads "Ripon House, Aelfor Cottage, Aelfor Villa, Aelfor PO, 2-3 Aelfor Terrace". Aelfor Cottage comes up on Google maps (Park St).

What's the source of your 1883 "2 Aelfron Terrace?"

There's a Post Office marked next the Police Station. Wondered if that was the location of the 1911 "Aelfor PO"?

Aelfor Terrace starts here in 1881:

RG11/5546/133/8

I've looked at  the 1901 25 ins OS map but it doesn't seem to be labelled.

About 4 weeks ago I went to St Mary's Church in Llanaber, I spotted an interesting grave stone but didn't have a camera.  I went back yesterday and found it, also another one next which is the same family.

In the newspapers I can only find references up to No 7 which matches the gates, and Streetview shows 7a before the extension.
Earlier I was in the caravan shop so just opposite Aelfron Terrace but didn't know about it then.

The magistrates court next to No 1 has a date stone . Police Station 1906

I will have to try to reduce the file size of the photos to attach them.
More children were born and died between census, and some years Griffith was at sea.

On the 1901 Census, Griffith Evan's address is "2 Aelfor Terrace". In 1911 his widow Sarah is still at that address.
The address in your first link above is "2 Aelfor Terrace"

The 1902 newspaper items that refer to Griffith Evans at "2 Aelfron Terrace" would appear to be a misprint.
