Looking for paintings done by Frederick William Fortt
« on: Sunday 30 October 22 17:59 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information I can find on my 2nd great granduncles art.
his name was Frederick William Fortt born ABT. 1820 • Bath, Somerset, England (parents William Fortt and Marry Fisk)

He was the Worshipful Master of the Free Mason Lodge. (Royal Cumberland lodge No 41)

He was also a Painter and Artist. I have only found one Painting that he did "THE TEMPLE OF THE SYBIL OF VESTA - TIVOLI - ROME  (1893)"

I have I bunch of information on him yet what I am looking for is...

Him in the 1841 census (I have all the other census dates for him)

Any information on Him as a Free Masion (I do know he was the worshipful master as was his son and grandson) other than that I know nothing???

I am also looking for images of his painting. Failing to find that at least some information on his art practice.  I know he was well off, yet I don't think he was that famous of a painter so likely only researchable in his own town Bath, somerset.

The Bath Record Office (batharchives.co.uk) is a good general source, although I couldn’t see anything about the Masonic Lodge at first glance. If you go the section Bath in Time (bathintime.co.uk) you’ll find a lithograph of the Wesleyan Chapel (1850) as well as a letter dating from 1880 concerning the sale of some of his paintings.

Possibly he is missing from the 1841 census because he was abroad. The following is from an article on the death of his daughter, Miss A M C Fortt, in the Bath Weekly Chronicle & Herald of 26-5-1945.

... and will be remembered by an older generation of Bathonians as a former teacher of painting at her father's studio, 35, The Paragon. Her father, who was an artist in oil painting studied in Italy, and for a time was professionally engaged in the Vatican at Rome. He was held in high repute as a portraitist of local celebrities.

Have you checked his will (1913) for possible bequests of paintings to family/friends/organisations?

Pl ignore - this appears to be his son? The elder died 1898?

Bath Chronicle & Weekly Gazette, 5 Mar 1896
"The portrait of Canon Brooke, the late Rector of Bath, which was painted by Mr Frederick Fortt, and presented by friends, has been given by the Canon to the Rector and Churchwardens in trust for the Parish ... The picture will be hung in the Church House ...",
