Dear all,

I am researching the ancestors of Miriam Hopkinson. Here is the long story. You'll find my questions at the end ;D

Miriam Hopkinson, b 3 oct 1879 Brampton, Derbs, bap 23 nov 1879 Saint Peter, Old Brampton, Derbs

Mother: Mary Emma Bann, b Dec 1851 Poynton, Cheshire, bapt 1 Feb 1852 Prestbury, Cheshire. Mary Emma had a bro William.
William had a dau Lavinia, Lavinia was witness for Miriam’s wedding.

Father: John Hopkinson, b abt 1840. John had a sis Ellen and a bro William. Died nov 1902, buried 27 nov 1902 Clowne

Miriam married Henry Deakin on 8 Jan 1902 in Clowne, Derbs. They named their children Henry, Leslie, Alice Emily, Stanley, Carrie and Lionel. Apart from Henry I couldn’t find these forenames anywhere else in their families.

Census 1901 Clowne, Derbs
John (60yrs, b in Boythorpe, Derbs, coal miner), Mary E (49yrs, born in Poynton)
Miriam (21yr Brampton), John (19yrs, Brampton, Derbs, coal miner), Samuel (16yrs, Brampton), Harry (14yrs, Brampton), William (11yrs, grandson), William H Bann (Mary E's bro, 47yrs, coal miner, b in Poynton)
(I have found this document: John Hopkinson, b 1882 brampton moor, Brampton, bapt 16 mar 1882 Brampton, married Clarice Vardy on 4 Aug 1908 . His father was John Hopkinson, Gardener (deceased))

Census 1891 Mapperley, Derbs
John (50yrs, b in Walton, Derbs, Coachman / domestic Serv), Mary E (39yrs, born in Poynton), Mary Ellen (16yrs, b in Barlow), John (9 yrs, b in Brampton), Samuel (6yrs, Brampton), Harry (4yrs, b in Brampton), William R. (grandson, b in Barlow)

Census 1891 Little Common, Brampton, Derbs
Miriam (11yrs, scholar, b in Brampton) visits William Hopkinson. (Son of Ann Hopk., 37 yrs, b in Walton, Derbs, labourer) and Ellen Hopk, (dau of Ann Hopk, 47yrs, born in Woodthorpe, cotton winder)

Census 1881 Quarry Lane, Brampton, Derbs
John (40yrs, b in Hasland, Derbs, laborer), Mary E (29yrs, born in Poynton)
Emily (11yrs b in Brampton), Mary Ellen (6yrs, b in Great Barlow), Margaret (4yrs, Brampton), Miriam (1yr Brampton) / Visitor: Leah Bann (Mary E had a sis called Leah, b 1861)

Census 1881 Little Common, Brampton, Derbs
Ann Hopkinson (67yrs, Widow, b in Woodthorpe, Derbs), Ellen (dau of Ann, 36yrs, born in Woodthorpe, cotton winder), William (Son of Ann., 27 yrs, b in Walton, Derbs, laborer)

Census 1871 Brampton, Derbs
Robert Hopkinson (55yrs, Gardener, b in North Wingfield, Derbs), Ann (55yrs, b in Woodthorpe, Derbs), Ellen (dau of Ann, 26yrs, born in Woodthorpe, mill hand), William (Son of Ann Hopk., 17 yrs, b in Walton, Derbs, gardener), Eliza (22yrs, mill hand, b in Brampton), Ann E (13yrs, mill hand, b in Brampton)
// next door //
John Hopkinson (30yrs, gardener, b in Hasland), Sarah (26yrs, b in Brampton), Amelia (Emily) (1yr, b in Brampton)
(Due to Derbyshire Courier 03 June 1865 a John Hopkinson married a Sarah Rhodes on 3 Jun 1865 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Saltergate, Chesterfield. Sarah died in August 1871 at the age of 27).

Census 1861 Brampton, Derbs
Robert Hopkinson (44yrs, ag labourer, b in Wingfield, Derbs), Ann (44yrs, b in Woodthorpe, Derbs), John (20yrs, ag laborer, b in Hasland), Ellen (16yrs, b in Woodthorpe, cotton winder), William (7 yrs, b in Walton, Derbs), Eliza (12yrs, b in Brampton), Ann Elizabeth (3yrs, b in Brampton)
// next door //
John Briggs (39 yrs, coal miner, b in Tupton) with family. Robert’s wife Ann is nee Briggs; John is obviously her bro.

Census 1861 New Whittington , Derbs
David Bann (30yrs), Sarah Ann nee Booth (27 yrs), Mary Emma (9yrs, Worth, Poynton, Cheshire), William Henry (7yrs), Elizabeth (5yrs), Leah (1yr)

Census 1851 Newbold and Dunston, Brampton, Derbs
Robert Hopkinson (35yrs, labourer, b in North Wingfield, Derbs), Ann (35yrs, b in Woodthorpe, Derbs), John (12yrs, b in Hasland), Mary (10yrs, b in Tupton), Ellen (7yrs, b in Woodthorpe, cotton winder), Eliza (2yrs, b in Brampton)

Census 1841 North Wingfield, Chesterfield, Derbs
Robert Hopkinson (25yrs, railway labourer, not born in Derbs), Ann (25yrs, b in Derbs), John (10mths, b in Derbs), Charles (4yrs, b in Derbs)
Next door: Luke and Esther Briggs, Ann’s bro with his wife

I wonder whether these two conclusions are correct or not:

Robert Hopkinson and Ann nee Briggs are John’s parents. John Hopkinson was born Q3 1840, District Chesterfield. I couldn’t find his bapt.

I've found:
John Hopkinson, 30yrs, Widower, Laborer, (father: John Hopkinson, gardener)
married on 17 Mar 1872 in Brampton, St Thomas, Derbs,
Mary Emma Band, 20yrs, spinster, (father: David Band, coal miner)

Problems:
Wrong name spelling (Band instead of Bann), Mary Emma Bann’s father was David Bann, coal miner, though.
Wrong father for John, should have been Robert ...
However I couldn’t find any other marriage close to this one.

Coincidence or not? Ann Elizabeth’s (b 1857) marriage document (she mard 27 Oct 1878 Saint Thomas, Old Brampton, Derbs James Potter) said originally: Her father is John Hopkinson. There has been made the following correction in 1886: In entry no 204 column 7 for John read Robert. Corrected on 28th July 1886 by me ... in the presence of James Potter …
Could the same error have been made at John’s marriage???

Hmm, John's occupations do vary widely: gardener, ag laborer, coachman, coal miner ...

Thank you in advance

My grandmother was a Hopkinson and I have Robert and Ann Briggs on my extended Hopkinson tree.

All your research dovetails nicely apart from John's father's name and Bann/Band.  Having said that, the evidence you have for Mary Emma Bann and Mary Emma Band being one and the same person is strong.

It would be helpful to have a copy of John's marriage certificate in 1856 to Sarah Rhodes to compare his signature to that on the certificate for his marriage to Mary Emma Band in 1872.  Mary Emma made her mark, in which case she wouldn't have been able to check the spelling of her surname.

There is a lot to suggest that John was the son of Robert and Ann.

A very good idea. I've just ordered a copy ....  :)

In 1911 Mary Emma is a 59 year old widow living in Clowne with a son and grandchildren one of whom is called William Rhodes Hopkinson.  Coincidence - maybe, maybe not!

My Hopkinsons connect a couple of generations back from Robert and Ann Briggs, so we are distant cousins.  Happy to share research if it helps.
