Florence Woodman

Can Rootschatters help me find Florence Woodman?

Florence’s birth is registered December quarter 1891 in Chipping Sodbury. She’s baptised In January 1892 in Wick, daughter of John, a labourer, and Mary Jane (nee Knight). It’s the second marriage for John, first wife Flora, and a child, die in 1880.

Florence appears with John and Mary Jane and a 15 year old sister, Ellen, in Siston, Gloucestershire in the 1901 census. John appears to have moved up in the world as I think he is now a farmer - 09/2347/8/41.

John and Mary are together in 1911, in Warmley, Bristol, with a 19 year old daughter, so about the right age, but called Frances! There’s also a grandson, 9 year old Albert George William.

I cannot decide whether Frances is Florence, and cannot find what happened to her after 1911. Can anyone find her?

Suspect Frances married firstly Isaac Bryant in 1914 and after his death Thomas Fifield in 1937. If you search for Frances Bryant in the 1921 census and Frances Fifield in the 1939 register this should point to her date of birth.

Thank you, I’ll take a look. Still wondering about the change of first name though.

Father John is a licensed victualler according to the first marriage certificate

The 1911 census says John and Mary Jane have had 5 children, 3 still living. These appear to be their children (all registered at Chipping Sodbury)

1883  Albert
1885  Ellen
1887  Alick (d1888)
1889  Emma (d1889)
1891  Florence

So I would say "Frances" is "Florence", though why the change of name, I don't know.

For interest, there is a newspaper item in 1894 noting that the farm in occupation of John WOODMAN at Wick Rocks was declared free of swine-fever. Noting that Florence's baptism has their address as Wick Rocks.

Thank you everyone for what you’ve found. It does seem for whatever reason, that she decided to use the name Frances, although we can never know why.
