Will of Edith Hornblow of Thatcham Berkshire 1617
« on: Friday 04 November 22 16:22 GMT (UK) »
I am back again with another Hornblow Will. Being very rusty I would be grateful for help with the attached in order to get my eye in again.
Thanks, Toby.

I think it is just the preamble to the will.

Testament of such things as it hath pleased him of his great goodness to give me the use of in this transitory world in manner and form following, revoking, repealing and utterly renouncing all former wills by me or any other.

I didn't translate it letter for letter, but translated the words for modern eyes. Just a disclaimer that I am not the resident RootsChat expert, so I may have made some mistakes, but I thought I would have a stab at it anyway as I am trying to learn.

Thanks QueenoftheWest. Yes that seems right. The attached is a little piece earlier in the will

"Ireland defender of the Faith and Scotland  xxxx     xxxx Edith Hornblow.." which seems also to be jargon. Do the xxxx gaps make any sense?

This one isn't as clear to me, but I believe it is talking about James I (the first) and referring to the amount of time he has reigned, perhaps the word is fifty?

Ireland defender of the Faith and of Scotland the fifty ? I Edith Hornblow.

Again, I am no expert.

That's a good idea. James I came to the throne in 1603. (I had to look it up!) Perhaps the word is thirteenth? T

Yes, the word if fifty, i.e. the will was made in the fiftieth year of the reign of James VI of Scotland (he ascended to the throne of Scotland in 1567).

In modern English, I think the second part is:

"widow, being sick in body but in good and perfect (?) memory".

When I looked at the first bit, my immediate thought was "dean of Sarum" i.e. the Archdeaconry of Sarum, which is where quite a few wills were proved, but I'm not sure if that would cover Thatcham in Berkshire.

Will wait to see what others think.
