Sarah from Churchill in Halfshire
« on: Saturday 05 November 22 13:13 GMT (UK) »
I want to find the birth surname and baptism details of  "Sarah" who married George Moreton (Morton / Mourton). In the 1871 census of Caunsall (Wolverley) Worcs, she is recorded as age 83 and born in Churchill - that would imply she was born around 1788.

When I visited in The Hive some years ago, I searched the Churchill baptisms around  1787 - 1793 without success.  However I now realise there are two Churchills in Worcestershire and I searched the one near Worcester i.e. the wrong parish - rather than the second Churchill near Kidderminster.  If someone could check the baptisms of the other Churchill (Churchill-in-Halfshire) at the Hive for the approximate years  1788-1793 for me to find any "Sarah" that would be amazing and I would be so grateful.
NB: I havent been able to find a marriage record for George and Sarah;  it would be pre 1823 (and possibly pre 1820) as their daughter Mary was baptised in Kidderminster in 1823.  George was baptised in Bromsgrove in 1800.
Many thanks

Have you looked for them on earlier censuses?  1851 shows a 21yr old son George

1841 also has daughters Mary & Ellen aged 8 & 9 respectively.  Mary’s age does not fit an 1823 baptism.  George is shown as b 1829.  1841  & 1851 census below

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ5G-9CP

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGCF-Q67

Son George baptised Wolverley 5.7.1829 & Ellen 4.12.1831

Censuses show Sarah was between 6 & 8 years older than George

If George was their firstborn - Sarah would have been around 41yrs old & George snr 34 so Sarah could have been previously married

Thank you and particular thanks for reminding me of the ages on the 1841 census.
It is very confusing.

According to the baptism register, Mary was baptised on 29th March 1823 in Kidderminster (foreign) - the daughter of George and Sarah Moreton - George being a labourer living at Hibberley ?St.

William Smith & Mary Moreton were married in Wolverley on 31 May 1845; she is described as from Caunsall, "of full age" and her father George Moreton.  Mary next appears on the 1851 census in Belbroughton as Mary Smith, with age 28 which would fit with her born in 1823, so I think the 1823 baptism is correct but it doesnt explain those 1841 census details.

I have looked extensively and cant find any record of George and Sarah's marriage pre 1823 - hence why I am trying to find and identify "Sarah".

The 1851 shows George aged 55 & Sarah 63
1861 George 65 - Sarah 72
1871 George 77 & Sarah 83

I can’t see any other George & Sarah Morton/Moreton in either Worcs or Warwickshire old enough to have married in 1815 so that marriage is a possibility

Hi
Trying to track down George before his marriage to see where he might be for that marriage.

George and Charles Morton baptised Bromsgrove 29 June 1800 s of John and Alice
Siblings
Thomas 10.5.1778 (Stoke Prior)
Pheobe 27 .10.1782-30.10.1782
Sarah 14.11.1783
John 22.3.1786
Frances 25.2.1789- 25 .10.1791
Samuel buried  28.4.1793

So probably a late baptism for Charles and George given the gap between the last baptised child Frances 1789 and 1800.
They married at Stoke Prior 31.3.1778 John Morton and Alice Fisher
Alice buried 19.3.1834 at Bromsgrove.
Burial for John 29.6.1800 a pauper(which may explain Charles and George being baptised on the same day).

As for baptisms at Chruchill none for Sarah 1788 as far as I can see.

Sarah Beddoes d of George and Phepbe 20.2.1789
Sarah Chester 15.7.1791 d of William and Ann
Sarah Field 15.11.1789  d of Thomas and Hannah
Sarah Fines 4.6.1786 John and Elizabeth
Sarah Hunt 7.11.1784 d of Thomas and Ann
Sarah Hawthorn 12.1.1783 d of John and Mary
Sarah Millward 8.8.1783 d of Josiah and Sarah
Sarah Page 11.4.1784 d of Thomas and Sarah
Sarah Whittaker 12.12.1784 d of John and Ann but she's unmarried on the 1851 census.

ps the 1831 census for Wolverley  has survived and is availible at Worcester Archives. It does give names and ages so may be worth a look to see other children ,additional relatives etc.

Hi Again
Not sure whether this might be a red herring but in 1841 Goerge and Sarah Moreton are living next door to James 55 and Ann 66 Cook.
A possible marriage for them at Birmingham ST martin
George Moreton/Manton and Sarah Cook widow 9.1.1819.
You never know .
The 1841 census ink is quite faint and I'm guessing ages have been written over
George 45/46 ,Sarah 50 .Mary I'm guessing should be 18 ,George 12,Ellen 9.

So children
Mary 29  .3. 1823 Kidderminster
Sarah 8.4.1827 Wolverley
George 1829
Ellen 1832
