It would more than likely be the shoulder title.
This was the (shortened) name of his Regt.

Good evening,

I can't be 100% certain but the dicing is red and white. So that would indicate to me that it is the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. I can't think of any others at the moment with just red and white.
Most Scottish regt's had another colour in the centre row instead of white. So alternate red and black or red and green mostly.

I agree with jim1 in that it is a shoulder title depicting his regiment / battalion.

I agree with John915 in that his glengarry depicts the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

With the above in mind, I have attached an enlarged image of the shoulder title from your picture together with an example of a shoulder title of the Argylls in WW1. The example that I show is that of the Argyllshire Battalion, a Territorial Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

I do also have an HLI cap badge which my mum was told belonged to her Dad, could he have started in one regiment then swapped?

The British Army did move soldiers around when the need was there.

If you post the name of the soldier in question (and if possible his place of birth and date of birth) it could help in trying to give you answers.

His name was Robert Hay Dunn.  He was born on 29 November 1893 in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire. He was the son of Alexander Dunn and Margaret Graham Hay.

I can't find any service records for a Robert Hay / Robert H Dunn that fit (or close) year of birth and place of birth. It is possible that the cap badge wasn't your grandfathers.
