Howdon Pans - St paul's Church
« on: Sunday 06 November 22 14:09 GMT (UK) »
Many of my relatives come from the Howdon Pans area.

As an example, one of them is Elizabeth Bell, who was christened at Howdon Pans on 17 December 1865.

I've found a transcription of the christening record on Family Search - no image available, but the source is given as England, Northumberland, Parish Registers, 1538-1950.

No specific church is mentioned - is it safe to assume that the christening took place at St Paul's, which I think was the Parish Church at that time, or could it have been elsewhere?

I've often found, when looking at records, that I can see a Parish mentioned but the church isn't.

Is this common or am I just failing to spot the Church name somewhere?

Not an answer to your question about Family Search but...

From Durham Records Online: Elizabeth Bell, 17th December, 1865, father Robert, at St Paul's. Birthplace is Palmer Terrace.

PS, yes there are Northumberland records at DRO.

It is usually possible to check out the source of an FS transcript, can be longwinded but try this:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGF2-JR66
That's the record you described.
on the left hand side click the down arrow where it says Document information and that tells you it was transcribed from digital folder 103135472

Search: Catalogue: Film number - put that digital folder no in and hit search

and that tells you that its registers of Howden Panns
the source of the filming was Northumberland Archives and their reference for these registers is
EP91/1-6, 8-12

Okay so off to
https://www.northumberlandarchives.com/catalogue/
Use Advanced Search and in the Ref No field put in EP 91 (it needs the space)
press search and you get this page:
https://calmview.northumberland.gov.uk/Overview.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog

Which confirms that its St Paul, Howden Pans so longwinded, but worth it to get verified confirmation of what you were looking for.

Once you've done this sort of thing a few times its a lot quicker to actually do it than type out the steps :-)

Thank you Alan and TickettyBoo for the valuable advice. That's going to help me a great deal in future.

I have many relatives where I have dates and general places, but it will be great to be able to pin down a few more specific churches and addresses. I'm especially interested in finding out about these buildings and places (although I know many of the houses my relatives lived in are long since demolished!).

Many thanks again.
