Sandra, were the family Roman Catholic? Given Thomas's birth place, this might be his birth & baptism:

Thomas FLOOD
THOMAS FLOOD/MARY MCGREARY
5/10/1843
12/10/1843
Dumbarton, St Patrick's

A sister:

Margaret FLOOD
THOMAS FLOOD/MARY MCGRORY
22/4/1841
2/5/1841
Greenock, St Mary's

You are going to have fun with spelling variants on mother Mary's maiden name  ::). Another RC birth entry:

Bridget FLOOD
THOMAS FLOOD/MARY MCRORY
20/1/1854
3/2/1854
Port Glasgow, St John's

Hi

Thank you both for your replies.

I can kind of see McRorie, it's very difficult for me to decipher so I really appreciate your help.

Thomas was born in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire in 1844.  He moved from Ireland just a few years before with his parents and older sister Mary Ann (born Ireland 1839).  Which part of Ireland I'm not too sure although DNA points heavily to Co Mayo and more concentrated to Achill Island.

Thomas and Mary Ann Corrigan/Kerrigan were married in St Patrick's RC Chapel, so one or both must have been Catholics.

He moved his family to North Shields and sadly drowned in the River Tyne in 1892

I will explore the suggestions of the surname Flood

Thanks again for your help

Sandra

How could he move from Ireland when he wasn't born?

Oops!

I meant his family moved from Ireland.

That’s what I get for messaging late at night!
