William Sloggatt Esq. of Boscastle parentage
« on: Wednesday 09 November 22 18:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am currently researching William Sloggatt Esq. of Boscastle, born about 1773, Lanteglos (87 in 1861 Census, Magistrate for Cornwall). I have found plenty about who came after him, but I have no idea who came before him, i.e. who his parents etc. were. He did quite well for himself with the Esq. after his name, and was seemingly joint owner of a company based at Boscastle called Sloggett and Rosevear (he married one of the Rosevears, Elizabeth Rosevear, 6 December 1794 at Kenwyn, though neither were of that parish, Elizabeth just a sojourner).

All I have found re his possible parents is a baptism record for a William Sloggett son of Andrew and Elizabeth on the 9 September 1781 at Tywardreath, which could be it, if he was born at Lanteglos by Fowey, not Lanteglos by Camelford. I would be very grateful if anyone else had any other ideas/found something new in this regard, thank you!

I see a few people on Ancestry have suggested Thomas Sloggett of Lanteglos, whose will was proved in 1777, as the father of William but, other than the fact William's first son seems to have been called Thomas, I can't see any definitive evidence either for or against this hypothesis.

I am just wondering whether you have seen William's will, which was proved in 1864? I can't promise it will reveal anything, but people often mentioned their wider family. It only costs £1.50 from https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills .

Maybe wait to see whether anyone else has a suggestion.

Thank you for your reply, and thank you for the possible alternative suggestion. I think I will order it, I have already ordered the will of his grandson James Sloggatt Hawker, who lived with him in the 1861 Census and who, according to a different website, shot himself in 1904, having become bankrupt (!). https://boscastlevillagearchives.co.uk/?s=sloggatt

the 1777 will of Thomas Sloggatt mentions his wife Bridget but no children

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01rx1/

Bridget remarried in 1779 to Joseph Brown
https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=marriages&id=1720324

and died in 1818, burial noting her as living at Trewalder, same abode as on the will of Thomas
https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=burials&id=4737021

Thomas Sloggett married Bridget Male in 1769
https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=marriages&id=1719958

Another Sloggett will does mention William, that of John Sloggett, yeoman, of Trewalder made bequests to Bridget Brown, wife of Joseph, and William, son of the late Thomas of Trewalder.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6R49-J2B?i=1886&cat=329778

John had married Mary Rush in 1770. He could have been a brother of Thomas.
