I have discovered that Charles Mulholland was born in Cork, Ireland and was older than his wife.
Any help in Ireland would be appreciated as I know that records can be missing over there.

Many thanks,

What is his father’s name from the marriage certificate? Sorry if this is somewhere but I can’t see it in the thread.
Records for births at the time you want are generally very good for Ireland. They are free and have good information.

However, the only birth I can see about the right period is in Belfast

He should also be included in 1911 census but again, none in Cork.

Where did the Cork information come from? How reliable is it?
With reference to the one born in Darlington, there is a newspaper article 1929 re his arrest as a stowaway in Montreal. I think the vessel was on its way back to UK. There is a bit of information re the two who were with him but not about him!
He is described as a labourer, of Edmund Street Darlington.

Interesting. Thanks.

Yes it is and I wondered if that was the ‘merchant navy’ connection you mention.
However, there are other records about Charles with the 1910 birth.
Have you searched the Irish records - no apparent Cork link there.
Do you have any record re Cork?
If you don’t have the marriage certificate, it would be a good to purchase it for his occupation, marital status and his father’s name and occupation.
That, hopefully, might help you to search for him.

Yes I did search the Irish records, but it made me wonder?
Sometimes, I know from past experience family stories are incorrect in terms of places of birth and sometimes by many generations!
I have a blank at present; I am researching on behalf of a different family to my own, so I’ll have to see if they wish to buy Charles’ marriage cert.

Thanks.

See my reply #6.  The marriage cert is the way forward to rule out other Charles Mulholland's.  His fathers name should be on the cert & hopefully Charles's  age.

If he was previously married his marital status on the cert should show either widower or possibly divorced or similar

The Irish 1911 has no entry for a Charles Mulholland in Cork so he may have been born after the census
