Captain of the ship Hudson - John Scott Paterson (Master)
« on: Friday 11 November 22 00:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi from New Zealand,

I am researching people who were possibly buried at the Camp Bay Quarantine Cemetery in Lyttelton Harbour here in New Zealand (no official burial list exists). I believe one of those likely buried there is Captain John Scott Paterson who died July 15, 1880. An inquest was held https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TS18800719.2.24?end_date=31-07-1880&items_per_page=10&query=John+Scott+Paterson&snippet=true&start_date=01-07-1880. He was the captain of the ship Hudson which arrived at Lyttelton Harbour on June 23, 1880. He completed his qualification as master on May 13, 1873. I would like to find out who his parents were and if he was married and had any children. I have attached the information I have which says he was born in 1848 Montrose, Forfar Scotland.

Many thanks and best regards,

Ashley

I've no idea how accurate this is but there's an online tree with a John Scott Paterson (born c 1848, Hamilton, Lanark with same death date but no place of death) with a wife named Rosanna Carlin although no date for the marriage.

There's this Marriage Index entry (scotlandspeople)

PATERSON JOHN / CARLIN ROSANN ANDERSON 1874
647/ 4 Hamilton

They also have a daughter named Sarah...

Born 16 Aug 1868 Hamilton, Lanark (which would be prior to the above marriage)

Death 7 Apr 1942 Boston, Massachusetts, USA

The only help there would be the MC which would give parents' names but there's no way of telling if it's the same John & the lack of a middle name/initial doesn't help.

I can see a few references to a Mr Robert SCOTT, flesher of Montrose in the 1860s and 1870s. A possibility of John Scott PATERSON's step father. One item gives his business address as Ferry St. The business seems to be in charge of George SCOTT in later years.

I assume "flesher" is a butcher.

You might expect to find a Will for John Scott PATERSON, died, 1880.........good work skills, wife, child.........absent from home in dangerous occupation etc.

Looking at Scotlandspeople, and Ancestry Probate Calendar, I do not see anything.

LDS transcription of 1881 census at Scotland's People lists in Montrose Robert Scott, 51, flesher master, born Montrose, with wife Charlotte, 57: and sons George, 25; David H, 20; and Henry S, 18.

David Hislop Scott, born 28 December 1860, Montrose
Henry Steele Scott, born 14 July 1862, Montrose
Both being sons of Robert Scott and Charlotte Begg.

Charlotte Begg married John Paterson in Montrose in 1845 and Robert Scott in Montrose in 1853.

1851 census, Montrose lists Charlotte Paterson, sailor's widow with Robert, 4 and John 2, both born Montrose.

Charlotte Begg or Scott, mother's maiden name Gordon, died in Montrose in 1903 aged 81.

Originals of all these pieces of information area available at Scotland's People.

I imagine that John adopted the middle name of Scott when his mother remarried.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

That's great work Forfarian. I wonder who his wife and child were. Have had a quick look without success, might spend a bit longer on it today.  :)
