54th Regiment of Foot 1817, James Hammond

I am researching my 3X Gt Grandfather who I know practically nothing about except he was married in Sunderland 5th January 1823 to Ann Reay.

However I have found this on Ancestry UK, British Army Muster Books and Pay Lists, 1812-1817

Regiment or Unit   54th Regiment of Foot, 1st Battalion
Piece Number   6411


Can anyone tell me anything about the movement of the 54th Regiment of Foot around that time and how long they stayed in Sunderland.

Where would I be able to find out more about him please?

Looking through newspaper mentions of the 54th in January 1823 (the time of the marriage in Sunderland), the main part of the regiment was in India with some elements (presumably a depot company) at Albany in the Isle of Wight.

The 1st Battalion of the 54th moved from Sunderland to Chester in October 1818.

Start of Muster   25 Jun 1817
End of Muster   24 Sep 1817
Stationed or Muster Place   Sunderland

He was 1st battalion but he wasn't present in Sunderland in that quarter. Per the muster roll he was "Recruiting in Darlington".

It seems that James Hammond became a mariner:

It seems that James Hammond became a mariner:

They had two children James b1823 in Sunderland, died 1828 in Covent Gdn St. Then Abraham Reay Hammond b1825 Covent Gdn St. d1877.

The Father of Ann Reay, who James Married, was a Master Mariner.

I can find no mention of a James Hammond in Sunderland before 1823 - except this one in the 54th Regiment of Foot. Nor can I find a death or burial after 1825. Ann James's wife married again in 1833 so I am presuming that James was maybe lost at sea or just failed to return home.

So because they were stationed in Sunderland until October 1818 then it may be possible it could be him.

Is there more Muster Rolls for this Regiment before and after 1817 in the National Archives does anyone know.
