new computer
« on: Wednesday 16 November 22 11:37 GMT (UK) »
I have bought a new computer, I had various family trees saved on family tree maker and in cloud storage. I saved them all onto a usb stick. I cannot access them at all on my new computer, anyone advise on what I am doing wrong. I cannot seem to access them through cloud storage either.

Hope I'm not stating the obvious but have you installed the FTM software on your new computer ?
Depending on which version you have  you may be able to get a link from Software Mckiev  to install on a new machine.

What's the issue with the usb stick? Can't see it at all, or can't see the files on it? Is this windows or mac?

I only have a disk to install it, and my new computer does not have anywhere for a disk, obviously didn't think it through. I thought with it all being in cloud storage it would be okay. USB stick gives me the option to open with word which I did and load of gobblegook came up.

Not done this for years, but shouldn't you have saved the trees as Gedcoms ? ... they could then have been put back into your new version of FTM (or any other software) and also read as plain text.

Don't despair.

It sounds like the usb stick has the ftm files on it.

Contact Software Mackiev and they can give you a download link to reinstall ftm.

Then you should be able to copy the family files in from the usb stick.

Another option is to buy an external disc drive for the new computer which can be linked by usb.  You could then install FTM from your original disc.

There are some fairly inexpensive ones available although I don’t know how good they are.
