There is a Michigan marriage record - Albert  P Hendrickson (aged 54 years) 224 Marlin Royal Oak Michigan - born Menominee. Michigan. Builder. Father Olaf Hendrickson.
and
Emma B Smith,  50 years old - same address as above - born Sarnia Ontario. Fathers name Robert Shaw and Mother Belle Cleghorn.

Married City of Pontiac Oakland Michigan - 11 July 1936 (looks like Emma born 1886)

Yes, thank you, I'd seen that.  What I really need to prove or disprove is whether George Cleghorn / Gleghorn was really George Collier, but other than ordering his death certificate I'm not sure how else I can do that.

The fact that he named a daughter Isabella (his mother's name) does look very promising though, as does his month of birth being September, even if the year was wrong.

Even with the death certificate, if he has changed his name it might not be recorded.
Sometimes a border crossing document might say "alias"............
There aren't very many of those around prior to 1900

I know its a long shot, but I'm hoping there might just be a nugget on there that helps - DoB, parents forenames, anything really!

I know from his daughter's 2nd marriage (1894, Ontario, as Kate Smith) that his wife's surname was Long, but I'm not finding a marriage for them so far.
