Searching for Richard Poole
« on: Friday 18 November 22 22:15 GMT (UK) »
I wonder does anyone have any suggestions to help me find the parents of Richard Poole.

I have established that Richard was born in 1706, he married Martha Baker in Yatton on 23/10/1731 and died in 1775 being buried in Kenn, Somerset on 10/04/1775. I am assuming he was born in Somerset/Gloucestershire as (pretty much) all of the descendants stayed in the Bristol?Yatton?Long Ashton area.

Richard and Martha had seven children, that includes my ancestor Abraham Poole bn 10/07/1743.

All of the above information has taken me quite a while to compile but now I am completely stuck.

Ideally I would like to establish who Richards parents were and any siblings he may have.

I subscribe to FindMyPast and have obtained some of this information from a Family Bible that a relative has.

If anyone could point me in the right direction or make any suggestions I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you

A few questions:
1. How do you know he was 'born in 1706' if you don't have his birth or baptism?
2. Have you seen the actual entry for his burial? Does it give an age?
3. Have you seen the entry for the marriage in 1731? Does it give any more information about him?
There are only transcripts of the Yatton /Kenn registers on findmypast, and the films are locked on familysearch.org, which means you can only view them at an LDS centre.
4. Do you have any idea of his occupation? Sometimes that can be helpful in tracking previous generations.
5. I see the names of his children are fairly common ones, apart from your Abraham, and don't give many clues for searching Richard's parents. I see the eldest son was called John, so there is a chance Richard's father might also have been John, but this by no means certain.
6. Have you looked for wills for Richard, or any other "Poole" names in and around Yatton? I had a quick look on findmypast, but couldn't see any. You might like to do a more thorough search.
You never know what family members may be mentioned in wills.
7. Have you searched the Somerset Archives catalogue for mentions of the Poole family?
https://somerset-cat.swheritage.org.uk/

I see the transcripts for the marriage in 1731, and some baptisms, give the name as 'Pool'.
I'm sure you're aware to search for any number of variations of spelling of the names.

Good luck!

FreeREG does not mention the age of Richard/Martha on their 1775/1776 Burials.

This looks likely to be Richard & Martha’s eldest son, there is also a record at Yatton, same date, for him which states they were of Kenn

John Pool Baptism   13 Aug 1732 Kenn, Somerset

2nd son   William Pool
Baptism   9 Sep 1734 Kenn, Somerse

This is the only Martha on Ancestry in the County
Martha Baker [Matthia Baker]
Baptism 2 Jun 1713
Bruton, Somerset
FATHER Richard Baker

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

I also saw that 1706 bapt on Anc;

Plus on this site;
http://www.durtnall.org.uk

POOLE, Robertus, s.o. Guleilmi & Mariae 14 May 1693
POOLE, Johannes, s.o. Gulielmi & Mariae 9 Feb 1694
POOLE, Abrahamus, s.o. Gulielmi & Mariae 3 Oct 1697
POOLE, Abrahamus, s.o. Gulielmi & Mariae 20 Aug 1699
POOLE, Grace, d.o. Gulielmi & Mariae 3 May 1702
POOLE, Sarah, d.o. Gulielmi & Mariae 1 April 1705
POOLE, Richardus, s.o. Gulielmi & Mariae 17 Nov 1706
POOLE, Sara, d.o. Gulielmi & Mariae 27 May 1710
Bapts end 1712***

Cant see a Marriage Huntspill but on index to Burials  we have;
POOL(E)   Eliz 729; Jane 743; John 833; Mary 727; Rob 731, 738; Will 714; Wm 714
(you can look at full info under burials)

On FreeREG we have;
WM Poole bapt 30 Dec 1713  to William/Mary, buried 06 Apr 1714
WILLIAM Poole buried 15 Sep 1714
MARY Poole Wife of William buried 19 Dec 1727

As you likely know Elwyn  Gulielmi & Mariae are Latin for William/Mary

I am so grateful for all the replies I have received. Thank you all so much!

It does make me think that maybe I should consider changing to Ancestry instead of Findmypast as I was unable to find any of this information you have provided.

Would it be reasonable to assume that these names originate from France - or would they be written in Latin on the records?

Many thanks again.

Nothing to do with France.

If you do a bit of googling you will see such info as this;

Although not the common spoken language in England, the official written language was Latin until 1733. Many priests did start using English before 1733, and it is very common to find entries during the Civil War (1643-1653) and Commonwealth (1653-1660) periods too. If you studied Latin at school, this will help, but beware Medieval Latin can be archaic and is quite different from Classical Latin.

Also Catholic Bapts etc at a much later date are often in Latin.
