How do I know which is the right cert?
« on: Tuesday 06 September 05 16:20 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Hope somebody can give me some advice:

I want to order the birth certificate of my Gt Grandmother, the problem is I only know her name, the year of birth and the name of her Father, I don't know where she was born. I have looked on freebmd, but there are a large number of matches all in different areas, and I don't know which one is the right one. It would cost a fortune to order them all!! Does anybody have any ideas how I can find out which is the right birth certificate with the little information that I have?  ???

many thanks,
millerina

Hi

It depends on when/where she was born really - do you have her on any census returns giving a place of birth that could help narrow it down?

ec,

She was born in 1899, and unfortunately I have been unable to find her in the 1901 census. She was Florence Bailey and would have been 1 or 2 at the time of the census. I know her father was away during the 1901 census fighting in the Boer war, and where I have found one with the father missing, I have then been unable to find a marriage between the mother's first name and her Fathers name on freebmd.

Hope that makes sense,

Hi

So do you know her mothers name and fathers name or one or the other?

I notice from your profile that some of your rsearch is Scotland - are we definitely talking about England for Florence?

Another approach might be to locate the births of her siblings.

If after 1901-ish this might mean relying on 1837online.

If you can find the names of known siblings in a group in a registration district, I would try there first!

ec,

Unfortunately I only know her Father's name, thats really the main reason why I want to order her birth cert, so I can find out the mothers name. Florence was definately English, I just don't have any idea where she was born, all I know is that she was living in London in 1920.

Wendi,

I have her marriage certificate, I also know that she died at the start of 1958, so I have been able to work our from that that she was born in 1899. Her Father was Herny Frederick Bailey, and as far as I know he was with the Kings own Lancashire regiment, though the pictures I have of him were all taken in London!? Very confusing!!

Further to Wendi's question -

if you have her date of birth & dad's name from her marriage cert (my guess), does it give an occupation for her dad?

And does it say "full age" or 21?
